WorkSafe Victoria issued an alert warning that November and December are the deadliest months for workplace deaths, with 7 workers dying in 12 days and 9 deaths in 24 days the previous year. Statistics over the past 5 years show this period has extremely high workplace fatality rates. While the exact cause is unclear, WorkSafe speculates safety practices may lapse as companies rush to finish jobs before the summer break and holidays. Most past incidents occurred during routine tasks, suggesting workers' attitudes or approaches change in a way that compromises safety.

1. WorkSafeSeasonal Warning
WorkSafe Victoria is so concerned about the number of workplace deaths that are associated
with this time of the year that they have issued an alert WorkSafe have deemed November and
December the “deadliest” time of year for these types of deaths.
Last year around the same period 7 workers died within a space of 12 days and within 24 days,
9 were dead. The total number of deaths for 2011 was 25.
Statistics over the past 5 years prove that this time of the year is an extremely hazardous time
for workplace fatalities.
It is not clear what the reason is for these increased numbers in workplace fatalities but it could
be that workers adapt a more relaxed approach to work and safety which leaves room for
incidents to occur. WorkSafe have speculated that safety could sometimes drop in priority as
companies rush to complete jobs before breaking for summer and workers look forward to the
holidays.
Most of the incidents that occurred in the past happened while workers were performing routine
tasks, this indicates that something must shift in the attitude or way they do their jobs that
results in safety issues.
