Women achieved several firsts in the 1930s-1940s such as Jane Addams receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 and Amelia Earhart becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic in 1932. During World War II, many women took jobs in factories as the men left for war, though they earned less than men and worked in difficult conditions, sometimes lacking proper facilities. This helped keep production stable but was taxing as women worked long hours both at their jobs and at home.
