Here's some backround infomation about him.. Born in 1860, died 1925 Devout Democrat Practiced Presbyterian Peace advocate Great Public Speaker over 500 different speeches in 1896 alone
Before He addressed his speech, People were dealing with the Panic of 1893. United States was suffering with Deflation. The Panic was a result of over completion of railroads Prior economic problems was the already struggling people in debt
The speech was originally delivered at the Democratic convention in Chicago, in the year 1896 His speech started by adressing the issue of bimetallism bimetallism was when the United States used both gold and silver to equal the value of a dollar He wanted to convince congress to officially set the dollar standard to silver. This was great news to the lower class. It would be easier for them to pay all their debts, and to make a better living. It was debatable because setting the standard to Gold would help trade. WIlliam Jennigns Bryan was seen as the "savior", the one who would save humanity from the "golden cross"(that being the standard of Gold currency).
The Public's reaction to The Golden Cross speech was incredible. The amount of support he recieved was more than what he had originally anticipated, and because he was so very popular he was nominated for president. As his audience grew, his popularity boomed. He was so popular that people nominated him to be president! In the end, though, he lost the election twice, and the dollar standard was set to gold.
