Not only is Slovenian player Luka Doncic
among the top international prospects in
next year’s NBA rookie draft, but he is
also considered by many of being the
sure re top pick. The 19-year-old guard,
currently playing in the EuroLeague, just
recently led his country to the FIBA Euro
Basketball championship title, alongside
fellow Slovenian and Miami Heat guard
Goran Dragic.

To be sure, there are many promising
players stateside. But Doncic is turning
heads for his size and ball-handling

can play both the point and forward
positions. He is explosive around the
basket especially on fast breaks, and he
shoots the ball with a high clip from
beyond the three-point arc.
The upside is certainly apparent. Luka
has been playing pro basketball for
years, since early on in his teenage years.
This is something other draft candidates
cannot boast of. He can dribble and
distribute the ball. He has excellent court
sense and assisting skills. And, most
importantly, he is great in the clutch and
already has a championship ring at just
19 years of age.
Of course, playing in the NBA is a
di erent thing altogether. But if recent
successes by players from overseas like
Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, and Giannis
Antetokounmpo are any indication, Luka
Doncic should feel right at home in the
U.S. league. The scouting is more or less
done; already teams like the Suns and
the Hawks are keen on getting the prized
Slovenian.
