EXT. BALCONY - NIGHT
The MAN sits by a round, plastic porch table. He has a drink
in his hand, and in the ash tray on the table, is a partially
smoked joint.
He takes a sip of his drink, then places it on the table.
Then he rests his elbows on his knees and rubs his face.
The sound of a door opening is heard.
The Man turns and sees a very beautiful WOMAN of his age
walk out of the building.
She makes her way over to him.
Being that the man is occupying the only seat at the table,
the Woman sits on the floor, with her face turned up at him.
MAN
Hello there.
The Woman grins and reaches out a hand, repeatedly pinching
her thumb and forefingers together.
The Man takes the joint out of the ashtray, and as the Woman
reaches for it, the Man gently grabs her by the wrist and
lowers it.
He then places the joint in her mouth and reaches into his
shirt pocket for a lighter; he lights the joint for the Woman.
The two sit in silence, as the Woman puffs away.
She takes the joint out of her mouth and hands it to the
Man.
The Man accepts and takes a hit.
WOMAN
Savor it. We're almost out.
The Man holds in the smoke, leans forward and gently caresses
the back of the Woman's head.
He places two fingers on the her chin, gently separating her
lips. Then he releases smoke in her mouth, finishing off
with a kiss.
The Man pulls away, still caressing the woman's head and
looks her in the eye.
MAN
Don't want to be a hog.
2.
The Woman laughs, then kisses the Man.
Then she stands up and sits on the Man's lap, facing him.
They intensely look each other in the eye.
MAN (CONT'D)
What?
WOMAN
Hungry?
INT. APARTMENT - AFTERNOON
The Man sits in the living room, at a computer, as the humming
of a microwave is heard.
It appears as if he is working on a story, possibly a novel.
The microwave's humming ceases, the timer beeps.
The woman can be seen, from a distance, in the kitchen,
opening the microwave and removes from it a T.V. dinner.
She places it next to an identical meal on the table, and
proceeds to open the both of them.
The Woman the empties the contents on two plates that sit on
either end of the table.
The Man then looks over his shoulder into the kitchen and
turns back to the computer.
He immediately ceases working and walks into the kitchen.
After piling the food onto both plates, the Woman sits in
her Chair, and from her side of the table, gently pushes out
the chair for the Man, with her foot.
The Man looks at his dinner, then grins.
WOMAN
What?
MAN
How did you know I wanted T-bone?
The Woman laughs.
WOMAN
You're such an asshole.
The Woman takes a couple of bites of her food, but then her
face turns into a grimace.
3.
MAN
Is something wrong?
WOMAN
Food didn't heat all the way. Still
a bit cold.
The Man stirs his food with his finger.
MAN
Here.
He slides the plate to the Woman.
MAN (CONT'D)
This seems to be all the way heated.
The Woman looks at the food that was given to her, then looks
at the man.
MAN (CONT'D)
What?
INT. APARTMENT - EVENING
The man is at the door, paying the pizza guy.
The pizza guy hands over the food.
MAN
Keep the change.
PIZZA GUY
Thank you. Have a nice day.
The Man closes the door and walks to the couch where the
woman is sitting, watching T.V.
He sets the pizza on the coffee table in front of the couch
and sits next to the woman, then opens the box.
The woman takes out a slice and bites into it.
She waves her hand in the air, and grabs for a bottle of
soda, which has a straw in it, and takes a drink.
MAN
You okay?
The Woman puts the drink down.
WOMAN
Food's a bit hot.
4.
MAN
Now it's too hot?
The Woman rolls her eyes, and leers at the Man, with a slight
smirk on her face.
She rubs a thumb on her mouth.
WOMAN
I think my lips are numb.
She giggles.
The Man puts his hands on her shoulders and leans in, kissing
her on the lips.
MAN
Did you feel that?
The woman grins.
WOMAN
Shut up.
MAN
Oh yeah? Well we'll need to fix
your attitude!
The Man grabs the straw out of his own drink and points it
at the woman.
MAN (CONT'D)
We shall sword fight.
WOMAN
With straws?
MAN
Hey! I can put an eye out with this
thing!
The Woman laughs and gently kisses the Man on the lips.
The Man puts his arm around the woman, and they cuddle.
With their attention focused on the T.V., the voice of an
announcer is heard.

INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT
We immediately cut to the couple, hours later, on the couch.
The Man is awake, while the Woman sleeps, laying against his
chest, with his arms firmly securing her in place.
The Man gently removes himself from underneath her, and lays
her down on the couch.
He then takes an afghan, which is draped on the back of the
couch, and covers her with it.
The Man looks down at her and gently strokes her hair.
The Woman, still in a sleep state, vaguely becomes aware of
this, and slightly fidgets; she then becomes still and
continues to sleep.
The Man grabs a pack of cigarettes off of the table and walks
out to the balcony.
He sits at the round table, fishes a smoke out with his lips,
and lights it.
The Man takes a long drag, and looks out over the city that
has been taken over by the night.
It's quiet. Only crickets and the distant sounds of
pedestrians can be heard.
INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT
The Man enters the apartment living room and finds the woman
is no longer on the couch.
He looks around and sees light coming form beneath the
bathroom door, which is slightly ajar.
The Man approaches the door and opens it to find the woman
in the tub.
Only her bare shoulders, up to her neck, are clearly visible.
The Woman looks mischievously at the Man and grins.
WOMAN
Don't you knock?
The Man puts his hands in the air.
MAN
Am I intruding?
6.
WOMAN
Would it do any good to turn you
away?
MAN
Okay. I see how it is.
The Man walks up to the tub and kneels next to the woman.
MAN (CONT'D)
Odd time for this, don't you think?
The Woman grabs the bath cloth hanging over the side of the
tub and hands it to the Man.
WOMAN
You tell me.
The Man takes the cloth and dips it into the water, then
wrings it out.
He begins to scrub down the woman's neck and back.
As the Man begins to wash the Woman's shoulder, she caresses
his hand and gently kisses it.
The Man continues cleaning the Woman and she goes into a
state of extreme relaxation.
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
The Man and the Woman are in bed, making love.
They thrust around passionately, and soon the woman sighs
with pleasure.
The two then slow to a complete stop.
We immediately cut to the Man and the Woman in the bed, with
the Woman locked safely in the Man's arms.
The Woman lies, facing away from the Man, and the Man's head
rests in the crook of her shoulder.
WOMAN
Babe?
MAN
Yeah?
WOMAN
Is this normal?
MAN
Huh?
7.
WOMAN
I mean...is this how couples behave?
The Woman turns to face the Man.
MAN
What makes you say that?
WOMAN
It's just-
The woman is lost for words.
MAN
What?
WOMAN
I just feel as if we're caught up in the moment. As if what
we're experiencing is a novelty that will wear off too soon.
MAN
What's making you think that?
WOMAN
I don't know. I've just been thinking
how so many people find someone
they're happy with, but as time goes
on, they just gradually lose interest
for each other.
Silence.
MAN
Don't think that way. I'm still
here, and so are you. We're happy.
That's how it should always be.
What happens after today has yet to
be determined. What's certain is
"now". What some people have is no
more than a burning candle in the
wind, while others are carried by an
eternal flame.
The Woman nods.
WOMAN
Okay.
The Man embraces the Woman tightly and kisses her on the
forehead.
She lays in his arms as they both fall asleep.
8.
EXT. BALCONY - MORNING
The Man and the Woman sit on the floor, against a wall.
The Woman has herself placed in the Man's lap, with his arms
around her, while she reads a book.
The Man keeps himself occupied, listening to headphones.
The Woman closes the book she is reading and leans back into
the man's warm embrace.
She reaches up in the air and takes the head phones out of
the Man's ears.
The two kiss.
MAN
See? This could last forever.
The Woman just looks at the man, with tears brimming in her
eyes.
WOMAN
I love you.
INT. BASEMENT - NIGHT
We cut to a man who resembles the Man we've gotten familiar
with.
This is clearly the same person, but not of the world to
which we've been introduced.
This Man sits in a basement, in front of a laptop on which
he finishes writing the story we have just witnessed.
Behind the Man is a noose which dangles from the ceiling.
He finishes writing and weeps into his hands.
After gathering himself, he stands up.
He leaves the laptop open, so whoever finds him will read
the life he was never able to have.
Behind the Man, the noose dangles, waiting to take him away
from what will never be.
THE END

What will never be
