This document provides an overview of the social studies curriculum for the 2020-2021 school year. It outlines that 5th grade will cover American history from early colonization through the Cold War. 6th grade will cover world history from early civilizations through the histories of North and South America. It describes reading programs, vocabulary assignments, notebook requirements, use of Google Classroom, availability of teacher help, and policies on late work. The overall message is an introduction to the social studies classes and expectations for the upcoming school year.

to Social Studies
2020-2021 School Year

2. 5th Grade American History
 Throughout the fifth grade year
students will be demonstrating
their knowledge of The United
States as they explore the early
history of our continent,
colonization, our fight for
independence, slavery and
emancipation, industrialization
and up to the Cold War.

3. 6th Grade World History
 Throughout the sixth grade year
students will be demonstrating
their knowledge of World History
as they explore the early history
of the world, the ancient world,
as well as the early histories of
North and South America.

4. 6th Grade Reading
 Success Maker-computer
program designed to help
improve all areas of a student’s
reading.
Reading is Thinking!!!!

5. Vocabulary Assignments
 Each chapter the students will be
given a vocabulary assignment in
which they must copy the definitions
exactly from the glossary or no
credit will be given. Then they will
need to use the word in a sentence
and show their understanding of the
word. This assignment is graded in
this way to ensure the students will
learn to: follow directions, pay
attention to details, and to check
their work before they turn it in.
These are necessary skills to learn,
not only as a student, but in life as
well.

6. Notebook/Folder
 Each student will be required to keep
all assignments in their spiral
notebook and in the order in which
they are received or a list given by
the teacher. Every quarter (may be
more often) they will be collected
and graded for accuracy. This will be
a significant part of their Social
Studies grade. This helps the
students with their organizational
skills.

7. Google and Google Classroom
 We will be using Google and
Google Classroom, as well as,
other internet sources to
research various historical
events throughout the year.
 Google Classroom will be used
for study guides, quizzes and
some assignments.

8. For the Students:
 I will ALWAYS help you on
assignments, don’t be afraid to
ask.
 If you would like me to check
your assignment before you turn
it in. I will! However, it must be
done prior to your class period
and it must be turned in on time!
 I stay after school, so if you
need extra help I am here!

9. Pink Slips
 A pink slip will be issued to
students who do not complete/
turn-in an assignment. After 2
pink slips an OOPS! Note will be
sent home, and 3 pink slips will
result in an after school
detention. The student will be
given a detention for each pink
slip received after the third (3rd )
one.
