The Labour Market
Week 3
The Labour Market in Canada
• More volatile than in the past
• Which industries are shrinking?
  ▫ Manufacturing
 Textiles vs. Clothing: “less than 20 years ago, about 70% of the textile and
clothing products consumed in Canada were made right here at home.”
 The clothing industry has lost jobs within the last 15 years, where the
          textile industry has stabilized
 The manufacture of clothing is labour-intensive
 Some Canadian textile companies now focus on “technical textiles”:
advanced materials used in athletic wear and weather protection
 This involves more technology and therefore more capital

Where do we stand today?

• Canada's Current Job Situation- The National

▫ Where are we losing jobs?
▫ According to the National, why are we losing jobs?
Regulation in Canada
• Some say that one of the reasons Canada is
losing traditional jobs is because of our labour
  laws and our marketplace regulations
  ▫ Direct Energy Leaves Ontario

• However, Canada is also experiencing an
expanding labour market in other areas
▫ Health Care, IT, and the Skilled Trades are the
    Jobs of the Future
The Outlook
    • “It is hard to find people, across the board, we find
it challenging to find good people. It’s one of the
most difficult things to explain. You keep hearing
everybody’s out of work. And then you talk to
companies and they say they can’t find people.
    • “Job-seekers with college or apprenticeship
training are expected to get 35 per cent of the new
jobs, followed by university graduates, at 26 per
cent. High school dropouts are expected to get just
8 per cent of the new jobs..”

Flavelle, 2012. http://www.thestar.com/business/article/1114944--health-care-it-and-skilled-trades-are-the-canadian-jobs-
of-the-future
