Wangari Maathai: INTRODUCTION
• Wangari (1940-2011) was a Kenyan environmental
and political activist.
• She received the Nobel Peace Price and she was
the first african woman to receive it
Wangari Maathai: HER LIFE 1
• She was born on 1 April 1940, in ‘Lhithe’, a central
village of Kenya.
• Maathai was a Kikuyu member ( Kikuyu group was
an ethnic group)
• She received the scholarship and years after she
got a master’s degree in biology
Wangari Maathai: HER LIFE 2
• She also granted Doctorate of Anatomy from the
University College of Nairobi .
• A few years later, Mathai led the Department
of Veterinary Anatomy at the University of Naibori
Wangari Maathai: ACTIVISM
• She founded the GREEN BELT MOVEMENT in
1977.
• She went to prison several times.
• Maathai wanted an end to corruption and the
freedom to vote to different political parties.
Wangari Maathai: Nobel Prize
• She was awarded the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize for
her "contribution to sustainable development,
democracy and peace“
• She became the first African woman, and the first
environmentalist, to win the prize.
Wangari Maathai: Achievements
• She saved Nairobi’s Uhuru Park stopping the
construction of a tourist resort there.
• She has been mentioned Minister since 2003 to
2011
• In 2005 she was chosen as the president of African
Union's Economic, Social and Cultural Council

2011.
• Lots of women have been influenced and
encouraged to manifest after Maathai’s example.
