1.- A coil is something that is wound around and around in a circular or spiral shape.
Demonstrate :
• A snake can form its body into a coil.
• The boat’s anchor was attached to a coil of rope.
• The first mate wound the rope into a neat coil to store it.
2.- A descent is the act of coming or going down from a higher to a lower place.
Demonstrate :
• The airplane began its descent.
• The actress posed at the top of the staircase before beginning her descent.
• Riding up the hill was difficult, but on the descent our bikes flew.
3.- Foresaw is the past tense of foresee. Foresaw means “saw or knew beforehand.”
Demonstrate :
• No one foresaw the accident.
• The President foresaw that war would come.
• We took food with us because we foresaw that our flight would be delayed.
4.- To rappel is to lower yourself down
the face of a cliff by means of a rope fastened at the top of the cliff and placed around
your body so that the rope can gradually be lengthened.
Demonstrate :
• The instructor showed us how to rappel correctly.
• If the way down is too steep, climbers may have to rappel.
• To rappel, you slide down a rope fastened to your body.
5.- A ridge is a long and narrow upper part of something, especially a hill or
mountain.
Demonstrate :
• Jim felt the bony ridge of the old dog’s back.
• When you reach the ridge, you can see for miles.
• The icy ridge looked like a broken piece of glass against the sky.
6.- A shaft is the main part of a column or other structure or a high, narrow space.
Demonstrate :
• Looking down the elevator shaft made me dizzy.
• The miners entered the mine through a narrow shaft.
• The mountain climber could touch both sides of the rock shaft.
7.- Trekked is the past tense of trek. Trekked means “traveled slowly by any means.”
Demonstrate :
• The pioneers trekked westward in wagon trains.
• The caravan trekked across the desert.
• We trekked from one end of the mall to the other.
8.- A void is an empty space.
Demonstrate :
• Beyond the jet’s wing, Zach saw only a void.
• Much of outer space is a void.
• As we climbed the cliff, Jen advised us not to look at the void below.
