Veterans Day is celebrated each year on November 11th to honor all United States military veterans, both living and deceased, for their sacrifices to protect national liberty. The document discusses how veterans face challenges after returning from war such as injuries, illnesses, homelessness, and unemployment. It urges supporting veterans through organizations that provide services for employment, education, housing, medical care, and more. The county is dedicated to aiding veterans and lists some of the programs and organizations available to help veterans in need.
The Minnesota VFW State Commander has created this event. Starting from St. Paul May 27th, 2013 riders (and drivers) will set out for the four corners of the State. They will then all return to Brainerd May 31st. This event is to recognize our Vietnam Veterans (many who are still forgotten according to the Commander) and raise money for the Education Center at the Vietnam Wall in Washington DC. The Center will also include Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. There will be numerous stops along the routes to gather with veterans and families. The Travelling Vietnam Wall will be at Brainerd and on June 1st a tribute to our military including flyovers, Vietnam era living museum and more. That night there will be a banquet and candlelit vigil at Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd. All are welcome.

1. November is here, and for many people, that means it’s time to prepare for
Thanksgiving and the holiday season. As important as all these celebrations are,
there is one November holiday that must never be overlooked, for it reminds us of
the ultimate sacrifices made for our nation: Veterans Day.
Veterans Day was first established to mark the end of World War I, which was
officially declared at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Since then,
Nov. 11 of each year has been set aside to honor all U. S. Military veterans, both
living and deceased, for their efforts to ensure our nation’s liberty. When we think of
what these men and women endured in order to protect us, and how many of them
sacrificed their own lives in combat, we must realize that we not only owe them our
thanks, but our care. We must also educate our children on the importance of this
day, what it means, and how our veterans have made this country the best in the
world.
Without our veterans, we would not have the safety or the freedom we enjoy each
day. We must make a conscious effort not only to remember our fallen veterans, but
those who have survived. Countless men and women are still feeling the effects of
war even though they have returned home: Many live with serious injuries or
physical and emotional illnesses, while other veterans have difficulty finding homes
or employment. It is a harsh reality for veterans to face after what they have already
been through, but it is possible for all of us to lend our support and create a better
life for those returning home.
Middlesex County is dedicated to supporting veterans’ organizations, programming
and services. If you or a veteran you know is in need of employment, education,
housing or medical attention, I urge you to visit our website at
www.middlesexcounty.nj.gov and search ‘Veterans Services’ for more information.
Some programs we offer include the Veterans Housing Assistance program and the
Veteran’s Service Card. Other organizations that offer help to veterans in need
include Vietnam Veterans of America, American Legion, Disabled American
Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Order of Military Purple Heart, Veterans of
Korean War and the Wounded Warrior Program.
Once again, I ask you to show your support for our veterans throughout the year by
learning about the organizations in your area that aid veterans, and to give back by
volunteering with these organizations or donating to them. Lending your support is
the best way to remind our servicemen and women that they will never be
forgotten. Together, we can ensure that our nation will always be a grateful one, and
one worth fighting for.
