Jan Vermeer was a Dutch painter active during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century. He is known for his mastery of light and use of color in interior scenes with one or two figures engaged in some domestic activity such as reading a letter. Though relatively few works can be attributed to him with certainty, his paintings are considered some of the finest examples of Dutch Golden Age painting.
