Valerie Bloom was born in 1956 in Clarendon, Jamaica and moved from her hometown to England in 1979 to attend the University of Kent at Canterbury, where she earned an honors degree from 1982 to 1984. Throughout her life, Bloom has worked in various roles including as a librarian, arts officer, and steel band instructor, and has published multiple poetry books inspired by her Caribbean upbringing in Jamaica such as "Whoop and Shout" in 2003 and "Hot like Fire" in 2002.
