The Northampton Solid Waste Reduction and Management Task Force has scheduled two community forums to get feedback on options for disposing of trash and recyclables once the local landfill closes in June 2012. The first forum will be on March 7th at JFK Middle School and the second on March 11th at the Northampton Senior Center. The Task Force has developed four options based on a previous study and these options will be discussed in detail at the forums, along with cost tables and opportunities for public input. COMMUNITY FORUMS SCHEDULED FOR WASTE DISPOSAL OPTIONS
The Northampton Solid Waste Reduction and Management Task Force has scheduled two
community forums to solicit feedback and input from residents on the various options being
considered for disposing of trash and recyclables.
The first forum will be held on Monday, March 7, at 7pm in the Community Room at JFK
Middle School. The second forum will be held on Friday, March 11, at 2pm at the
Northampton Senior Center. The public is invited and encouraged to attend one or both
forums. The forums will be aired on Channel 15 (NCTV) and rebroadcast several times during
the month of March. The taped forum will also be available for viewing on the NCTV web site
(northamptontv.org).
The Task Force has been meeting since November, 2010, to review options for collecting trash
and recycling once the landfill closes (expected in June, 2012). The final recommendations are
due to be submitted to the Board of Public Works by April 1, 2011. Using the Solid Waste
Management Alternatives Study report as a guide (commissioned by the city’s Department of
Public Works and completed in July, 2009, by Stantec Consulting Services) the task force has
developed four options for consideration. These four options will be discussed in detail, with
handouts, at the forums.
