Twitter
Twitter Overview
Twitter has been a huge market contender for a number of years now, after being
founded in 2006 Twitter has only seen an incline in users ever since. This social media
platform provides the means of producing a 140 character update or message of
occurrences in people’s daily lives. Twitter gives people free reign to talk about almost
whatever they are giving an opinion, elements of humor or even politics. Twitter is a site
which is used by a vast range of people for a number of different purposes. Over my
many years of being a user on Twitter I can testify to the fact there are a vast range of
different communities on Twitter. The introduction of the use of the # this enables users
to channel their tweet into a certain group or network of other users which share the
same interests in the topic. The use of a Hash tag also ensures that the information that
a user communicates isn’t taken out of context as this could lead to some users
becoming pessimistic or even angry towards that user as they share alternative views.
The screenshot displayed is a survey which was orchestrated by the American Press
Institute with the purpose of finding out the different reasons or motives that people
have for using Twitter. The main three results identified how users are firstly on twitter to
to be alerted about breaking news the moment that it happens. The second reason was
just to be notified by general news occurrences: whilst the third was referring to the
users that are on Twitter to simply pass time. Evidently this suggests that there are a vast
number of different reasons why users are on Twitter demonstrating how Twitter has
expanded their platform to make it useful and desirable for a vast range of users with
different intentions of how they want to use the platform.

Twitter Purpose
The purpose of Twitter is provide a platform which has the ability to allow people from across the globe to be
able to stay in contact via an online platform. The Mission statement of Twitter is to ‘Our mission: To give
everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers.’ this demonstrates that
they are focused upon making Twitter available for all users on a global scale, not taking into account ethnic
background or religion. Twitter strives to create a community which allows users to find new users to befriend by
recommending who to follow and incorporating an common interest tag through the use of a hashtag.
In terms of the purpose of the platform of Twitter it is vastly dependent on the demographic of the user; notably
a range of younger users migrated to twitter as it provided the means to communicate instantly, effectively and
with various degrees of privacy which they can switch between. Notably twitter revolves around you profile
being accessible by all other users on the network; the purpose of this being to inform your ‘followers’ which are
people that have chosen to view you content on their newsfeed, of events or opinions which you pertain.
One of the main purposes which is clear through the system of Twitter is that that exist to provide up to the
minute news and relay it to the audience instantly. This is evident through the 2009-2010 Iranian election protest
as there was no news coverage to the print based media giants of the UK such as the Telegraph and Mail. Instead
of this the only way in which news could be discovered and accessed was via social media, the main source of
which being Twitter. Due to the proficiency and mass information spread which Twitter caused it lead to the
Iranian Government having to block websites such as Facebook and Twitter due to the issue it could cause with
the presidential elections. This demonstrates the pure power of Twitter, also this backs up the fact that the
purpose of Twitter is to provide the means to fast spreading ideas.

The house style for twitter has been notoriously white and blue for the
last 12 years; this facilitates a clean and professional house style that
does not change, despite the hundreds of interactivity and interface
adjustments. The the last decade Twitter has made various market wise
moves in order to place their product in a scenario that leads to
multiple different uses for the platform. This has become most notable
the last few years as Twitter has introduced a new segment named
‘Moments.’ The purpose of this is to collate various different form of
news in to numerous forms of sub genres. This allows users to select to
follow certain news providers such a Mail, Mirror and Telegraph on
Twitter in order to follow them for updates on breaking stories. The
screenshots which I have included to the right accurately demonstrates
how this newly introduced element of Twitter is highly optimized and
intended for users that are on the smartphone device. This is because a
user has the ability to promptly access the latest stories by simply
clicking on the tab with the lightning bolt as displayed on the
screenshot to the far right. The first screenshot presents the homepage
of each user’s twitter account when accessed from a smartphone
device. This gives them the ability to quickly scroll through content and
search for new information.
Twitter Content

http://pearanalytics.com/blog/2009/twitter-study-reveals-interesting-results-40-percent-pointless-babble/
Next it is important to investigate the forms of tweets which users
compose from day to day. A market-research firm named Pear Analytics
analyses around 2,000 tweets from the United States. The purpose of
which is to identify the forms of media which is produced by different
user. Notably the two main forms of content which is covered is 40%
‘Pointless babble’ with another 37% covering ‘Conversational’ topics.
This evidently reveals how unlike other social media platforms such as
Snapchat where the content is effectively the same for all users, Twitter
is very different. This is because of the wide spread of users which have
been discussed previously; it means that there are far more means and
genres within the platform. In the modern world of today you can find
various different trends from global news, bloggers and other smaller
local means. Twitter is known to try to articulate the content that user’s
view in order to meet their personal interests. Primitively in 2010
Twitter gave users the ability to follow certain sports, bands, events or
organisations in order to receive desirable content on their social
media platforms.

Twitter, in a very similar way to Facebook, Twitter is known for having a very wide
demographic of people. The screenshot presented below demonstrates how generic
stereotypes of social media user-ship are not entirely accurate. This being that typically
people assume that only the young generation are the types of users on the platforms.
However the graphic below, taken from UK Business Insider points out that under 18’s only
constitute for 16% of the users on the site. The heavily weighted brackets come in the form
of 18-29 years at 37% and 30-49 at 25%, thus showing that there is more older users than
there is youth. Having said this, it is clear that the platform is well rounded and caters for all
forms of users as there is such a wide spread in terms of the demographics.

http://www.businessinsider.com/how-twitter-makes-money-2013-9?IR=T
Twitter is the second largest social media platform on the planet. But how do they
make all this money when it’s free?
Three money-making ad products:
• Promoted tweets: Advertisers pay to have brief messages show up in users' stream of
Twitter messages. They can use keyword targeting to reach specific users. Advertisers can
also use a little bit of demographic targeting, although Twitter doesn't know as much
about its users as Facebook does. Twitter gets paid when users engage with the
promoted tweets (when they favorite, comment on, or retweet the ad).
• Promoted trends: Twitter lists which topics are being talked about most on its platform.
The trends vary by location, so Twitter's list of topics in the US might not be the same as
the list in England, for example. Advertisers can pay to have a topic of their choice listed
too. A promoted trend costs roughly $200,000 for a day of exposure on all US Twitter
accounts, the New York Times reports.
• Promoted accounts: If a brand wants more Twitter followers, it can pay to have its
account recommended to Twitter users.
Legal and ethical issues
Source: https://research20atimperial.wordpress.com/compulsory-content/legal-ethical-issues/
An element of social media that is often overlooked and largely ignored is the
terms and conditions of the platforms. Users should be made more aware about
the security the their data and the tweets that they are outputting. This being
since Twitter in the past has been criticized for selling data to law enforcement or
governments. Many people were outraged that this was a breach of the their
rights; however many users were given a shock when they found out the integrity
of their data. Much like Facebook Twitter is largely criticized by their ability to
allow users to express their own views with little regulation. This means that that
often authorities are angered by a lack of co-operation and refusal to remove
certain tweets and take down accounts. Since Twitter is accessed by such a diverse
audience it is important to consider that often users will be stretching and testing
the laws of Twitter. It is often used as a political medium as it provides politicians
with the confidence to lash out to other candidates and policies that they disagree
with. This is particularly prominent in recent times due to President Trumps
common usage of Twitter to convey his views on political and social topics at the
present time.
Snapchat
Purpose
Source: https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/history-of-snapchat
Snapchat is an Android and iOS app. It’s headed by co-founder Evan
Spiegel. One of the core concepts of the app is that any pictures or videos
or messages you send are only available for a short time before they
become inaccessible. The temporary, or ephemeral, nature of the app is
thought to encourage a more natural flow of interaction.
Ephemeral, or disappearing, messaging has skyrocketed in popularity
since Snapchat was introduced. In fact, since Snapchat's arrival to the social
media scene, Facebook and Instagram have launched their own versions of
some of Snapchat's most popular features. We've predicted that
competition will continue to grow between Snapchat and other popular
social networking apps as all the landscape continues to innovate new
products to distinguish from one another.
Roughly 150 million people use Snapchat every day, and they consume
around 800 hours of video per second.

Within the Snapchat social media app it doesn’t matter if you are on Android or
IOS platforms there are numerous different features which user can explore. The
predominant function of Snapchat is to send images that could primitively last for
only a period of 10 seconds. However one of the updates in the summer of 2017
meant that the time which users had to view Snaps became infinite if users
decided to select this choice. Furthermore, it is increasingly apparent that
Snapchat is the prominent social media format amongst young people of the age
of 13-25 especially in the UK.

According to Forbes, “Over 60% of Americans between the ages of 13
and 38 are Snapchat users.” And Bloomberg says that over 150 million
users are active each day on the platform, which shockingly surpasses
Twitter’s popularity.
The screenshot of the scatter graph to the right demonstrates the
average monthly minutes spent on various different social media
platforms that are in competition which each other. The graph
demonstrates how Snapchat is second in line behind the industry giant
of Facebook in terms of the time that uses spend on their platform.
The second screenshot to the right demonstrates the way in which
Snapchats user ship is evolving throughout time. Since the platform
have accurately targeted the younger generation and made it most
popular amongst teenagers. It makes sense that the growth amongst
young adults is slowing due to the vast majority of people already using
the platform. However, as of recent developments and efforts made by
Snapchats advertisements 50% of the user base it now over the age of
25.
Sources of revenue
Source: https://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-business-ideas/how-does-snapchat-make-
money/
Mediums of creating revenue through Snapchat:
• Snap Ads
Snap ads are the foundation for the Snapchat advertising. They work by displaying a 10 second full screen
video that are always relevant to other snaps. Unlike advertising in other social media networks these
advertisements are interactive and users have the ability to swipe up and access more content.
• Geofilters
The idea of a Geofilter is to provide a way of capturing and sharing a moment whilst contextualizing your
geographical location to your followers. This feature means you no longer need to provide details
manually; they are encouraged to produce user-generated content and share it their social circles. If
businesses and locations want a Geofilter then they have to create it themselves and submit it to
snapchat. Furthermore, the predominant way that Snapchat has the ability to create revenue from these
filters is by charging $5 for a coverage of 20,000 square feet, this works out as equivalent to a small sized
office. How the other hand the maximum area that can be purchased is 5 million square feet which works
out to a few blocks. Geo features are not permanent either; this means that businesses or locations
essentially rent the right to have their logo or area promoted for a certain amount of time. Individuals can
also pay for temporary Geofilters on events such as birthdays and weddings, thus revealing how the
revenue that Snapchat have the ability to create is proportional to the usership and the respectability of
large businesses who appreciate their influence.
Sources of revenue
Source: https://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-business-ideas/how-does-snapchat-make-
money/
Mediums of creating revenue through Snapchat:
• Sponsored Lens Filters
In a similar way to how Snapchat obtains revenue from geofilters it can do the same with sponsored
lens filters. This is because it also provides companies with the opportunity to create their own lens
filters when in that specific catchment area. An example of this is when eating at popular
restaurants such as McDonalds and KFC they have specific lens that promote their brand.
• Discover
Another feature which isn’t as popular but is continuing to grow is the discovery page. Here you can
find publishers such as Buzzfeed, People and Cosmopolitan. It is currently unclear as to how much
companies are charging for businesses to allow other companies to post their content. Since it has
20 big name publishers with the company it is likely that they are generating a considerable sum for
this business to be promoted.
• Sports Partnerships
In recent history SnapChat has partnered with sports organizations such as the NHL, NFL and MLB in
order to allow both of the businesses to benefit.
Legal and Ethical issues
Source: https://lawstreetmedia.com/news/the-dark-side-of-snapchat/
Although there are overwhelming positives with the way in which Snapchat operates
in the way in which it allows users to be in contact with people across the globe
without any hassles of economic strings attached. Typically the app is used to quick
simple and easy, but often silly communication between friends. This can come in the
form of pet pictures, selfies or just life situation updates. Although, despite this where
there is a large membership of various different people all interconnected together
there will always be ethical and racial issues. Snapchat has received criticism for
essentially making “sexting” easier and more accessible to harmful users. This is
because images disappear leaving no trace of the damage that the image could have
caused. Therefore making it increasingly hard to catch these often violent internet sex
pests as victims are too concerned to screenshot the images as it would notify the
one who is sending or requesting the images. The truth of the matter is that teens will
always push the envelope, and science tells us that they’re quite not as good at
making sound decisions as adults. There have been numerous different cases of sex
pests on different social media platforms that are taken to court and given prison
sentences. Often these internet criminals will claim that social media has the power
to make people feel as though they are empowered by the anonymity that the social
media platform provides.
Instagram
Purpose
Source: https://www.lifewire.com/what-is-instagram-3486316
In 2010 Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger co-founded Instagram. Instagram has and will
continue to grow due to the ever expanding industry of mobile photography that has
largely allowed image to be captured on mobile devices that 15-20 years ago could
not have been captured on the highest quality camera that money can buy. Instagram
is a social networking app made for sharing photos and videos from a smartphone.
Similar to Facebook or Twitter, everyone who creates an Instagram account has a
profile and a news feed. When you post a photo or video on Instagram, it will be
displayed on your profile. Other users who follow you will see your posts in their own
feed. Likewise, you'll see posts from other users whom you choose to follow. The
name "Instagram" comes from the words "instant" and "telegram“ with the purpose
of letting people know that they have the freedom to post an image wherever they
are in the world. Instagram was bought out in 2012 by Mark Zuckerberg’s giant,
Facebook for a sum of USD$1 billion. Initially it was thought that aim of this move
would be to purchase the brand simply to shut down and eliminate the competition.
However Zuckerberg has made it increasingly clear that they are invested and
"committed to building and growing Instagram independently, "thus demonstrating
how Instagram will continue to grow and develop into the future of social media.

Initially Instagram was a small social media product that was created for the sharing and viewing of
images between followers and family members. Initially Instagram started as a platform for quality
photographic images that photographers. Although it is arguable that Instagram to influence change
as it meant that mobile photography began to obtain traction in order to make people feel as though
all people have the freedom to post all types of images. Post 2015 Instagram became popular for the
exploration page that enables users to discover posts that the platform claims are influenced by other
images that they have liked thus enticing users to spend more time on the platform and find more
images.

Instagram is telling advertisers that early photo ads have generated
great results and that one client, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, reached 9.8
million people in the U.S. aged 18 to 35 in eight days. Therefore
demonstrating the advertisements that companies include to their
platform has the capability to prove to be really effective via image
form by reaching the younger generation. Over 90% of the 150 million
people on Instagram are under the age of 35, which makes it an
attractive platform for many apparel, entertainment, and media brands
focused on the 18- to 34-year-old age bracket. Despite the application
being available on the mobile format for a number of different years
extra. Currently users divide neatly at a 50/50 benchmark in terms of
Android vs Apple devices. Furthermore it appears that Instagram is
more widely used urban areas at 17% as supposed to rural areas at
11%. Unlike other social media platforms Instagram has proven to be
based on the ethos of quality not quantity as Instagram only accounts
for 7% of daily uploaded images amongst the top four image sharing
platforms. Therefore depicting that the trend amongst young people is
that they post high quality images.
Sources of revenue
Source: https://www.feedough.com/how-does-instagram-make-money-instagram-revenue-model/
Instagram didn’t generate any revenue till late 2013 when it proposed revenue
through advertising in its business model. It introduced sponsored post
advertising (just like Facebook’s) targeting US users in November 2013 and UK
users in September 2014. There was no stopping after that. Many new features
were introduced, many features were copied and advertisements were included in
many of them.
October 3, 2013 – Instagram Announced to add advertising to its platform.
December 12, 2013 – Introduced Direct, a feature that allows users to send
photos to specific people.
August 2, 2016 – Introduced Stories, a feature copied from Snapchat, which let
users upload photos and videos as their instagram story which automatically
expires after 24 hours.
November 21, 2016 – Launched live video feature which allows users to broadcast
live on Instagram for up to an hour.
Legal and Ethical issues
Source: https://techcrunch.com/2016/08/02/silicon-copy/
http://fortune.com/2017/05/16/instagram-face-filters-snapchat/
Typically when a business is accused of having copied or been influenced by
another business in the same industry it will often proclaim they had the idea for
years and hadn’t used it. Or that their idea is completely new when in reality they
entirely copied the other businesses idea. However, when it came to the head of
Instagram, Kevin Systrom admits that he copied Snapchat with the idea of the face
filters and stories that are implemented at the top of their page. He proclaims that
Snapchat is ‘due all of the credit for the creation’ thus revealing that in order for
Instagram to remain as one of the industry tops Instagram felt as though they had
to adapt Snapchats style in order to not only continue to grow, but widen their age
range of user and membership.
Further legal issues have arisen due to explicit and racially questionable posts that
are often found on the explore page or even on peoples main feed. To combat the
issue of using finding sexually explicit or even harmful images Instagram has no
input a sensor that has the ability to detect images with blood and gore, whilst still
managing to blur out images of nudity.
Data Protection Act (1998)
Source: https://www.gov.uk/data-protection
Everybody is responsible for using data correctly and must follow strict principles:
• used fairly and lawfully
• used for limited, specifically stated purposes
• used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not excessive
• accurate
• kept for no longer than is absolutely necessary
• handled according to people’s data protection rights
• kept safe and secure
• not transferred outside the European Economic Area without adequate protection
There is stronger legal protection for more sensitive information, such as:
• ethnic background
• political opinions
• religious beliefs
• health
• sexual health
• criminal records
Social media with Data Protection Act
(1998)
Source: http://blogs.lexisnexis.co.uk/wipit/social-networking-sites-online-forums-and-the-application-of-the-data-protection-act/
Now we know what the Data Protection Act is, but how does it link to social media? The
Information Commissioner's Office referred to as (ICO) is involved with the regulation of social
media in order to keep businesses on the correct side of the law as well as the users themselves.
What are ICO looking out for in social media?
• complaints from people who believe their personal data may have been processed unfairly or
unlawfully because they have been the subject of derogatory, threatening or abusive online
postings by third parties
• disputes between individuals about the factual accuracy of posts
• complaints about how the person or organisation running the site processes any personal
data (such as contact details) given to it by its users or subscribers
What are the responsibilities of social media platforms to their users?
• having clear and prominent policies for users about acceptable and non-acceptable posts
• having clear and easy to find procedures in place for data subjects to dispute the accuracy of
posts and ask for them to be removed
• responding to disputes about accuracy quickly, and having procedures to remove or suspend
access to content, at least until such time as a dispute has been settled
Social influences

lessons
We are all guilt of using social media, but does it ‘erode normal social behavior’
(Noam Chomsky).
Towards the end of 2014 the damage that social media was having on teenagers
started to become apparent. Studies have revealed that ‘teenagers feel the need to be
available 24/7, resulting with anxiety and depression.’ Teenagers are invested in the
networks that 1 in 5 will wake up during the night to check on the platforms. Severe
damage has been discovered in the sleep that teenagers are receiving as a result of
the dependency on social media. As a standard teenagers require more sleep than
adults; the recommended requirement for teenagers is that they receive 9.5 hours of
sleep whereas on average many young adults are only getting 7 hours sleep.
More studies are increasingly revealing that social media has more damaging effects
on teenage girls vastly disproportionately to teenage boys. ‘Teenage girls face the
pressures to look perfect, have the perfect body and be popular on social media
platforms.’ This has the ability to damage the these young people develop into
successful individuals as they are more concerned of the thoughts of others as
supposed focusing on their careers and life purposes.
Primary research
The first two questions serve the purpose of contextualizing who is accessing survey
and will influence the responses received. Out of those who responded all of which
were males, demonstrating that some of the information gathered may be subject and
will not be true if it covered the opinion of women. In terms of the age of those that
responded to the survey the average age was 17-18 which is arguably the
predominant age range for people using social media.
Primary research
The next two questions had the aim of identifying how often users are engaging with the different
platforms and the reasons for doing so. What attraction for people using social media. People evident
like the fact that they can engage with people all over the world and they do not necessarily need to
know them in real to be able to sustain interest and conversation. The other question included was to
find out how often users are engaging with social media, evidently males especially of the young adult
age are constantly engaging with the platforms at a minimum of daily, whilst the average was hourly.
Primary research
Next I asked what platform the users were finding themselves using the most, this was a rather split question as
each user appeared to give different answers providing very different answers. Thus demonstrating that there is a
purpose for all social media platforms since all types of users are exploring the platforms. The next question was
used to identify what user feel the primary issues are in terms of the negatives of using social media. People felt as
though one of the main issues with the vast demographic of social media is the continuous issue of sex pests and
people that are pretending to be somebody they are not.
Pay per click
Source: https://moz.com/blog/everything-you-need-to-know-about-sponsored-content
Pay-Per-Click Advertising is a form of advertising which witnesses search engines such
as Yahoo and the global powerhouse of Google to allow businesses to buy listings so
that they will be at the top of the search results. This increases the likelihood of this
web URL being selected by a user. Businesses will be charged a certain amount
proportional to the amount of visits that sites obtains due to the link placed at the top
of search results. In terms of the revenue that the likes of Google generates, if one
widget is at $0.20 and 100 people visit the site via this method then therefore a
revenue of $20 would be created for the search engine.
This modern advertising technique has been employed to attempt to provide a new
way of advertising products. This is because traditional methods of placing
advertisements at the edge of a website has passed since, internet users are fully
aware that the sites are advertising fake and ‘knock-off’ products.
Sponsored advertising
Source:
Sponsored advertising
In sponsored search, when a consumer searches for a term using a search engine, the
advertisers' webpage appears as a sponsored link next to the organic search results
that would otherwise be returned using the neutral criteria employed by the search
engine. Large multinational businesses such as Amazon and Ebay will often be at the
top of search boxes as they pay vigorous sums of money to have their platform placed
at the top of results for various different reasons.
Personal recommendations:
Since many young people are skeptical when it comes to believing in advertising to be
true and beneficial. Many will rely upon personal recommendations. This comes in the
form of friends or groups of people that people know. This is because they are
trustworthy and they are aware that the site is not harmful or damaging.
Commercial uses, advertising
Source: https://www.wordstream.com/social-media-marketing
Social media is a vital aspect of growing a small business into a multi-national and
globally recognized companies. Social media is a way of benefitting both the
businesses that are using the platform via technological convergence.
Social media marketing can help businesses by:
• Increasing website traffic
• Building conversions
• Raising brand awareness
• Creating a brand identity and positive brand association
• Improving communication and interaction with key audiences
Viral marketing:
Viral marketing is any marketing technique that induces websites or users to pass on a
marketing message to other sites or users, creating a potentially exponential growth in
the message's visibility and effect. A popular example of successful viral marketing is
Hotmail, a company now owned by Microsoft, that promoted its services and its own
advertisers' messages in every user's email notes.
Social media reviews
Source: https://www.webmd.com/parenting/features/4-dangers-internet#4
“It Is Not Inappropriate !!This App Is Not Inappropriate!.” Parents of children using
social media across the globe are growing in concern for the safety of their children on
the web. Specifically on Snapchat. This is due to the fact that the site has the images
disappear after as little as 1 second. This leaves children open to sexual harassment,
manipulation, deception and abuse.
Research has highlighted how children become open to:
-Cyber bullying
-Sexual Predators
-Pornography
-Damaged Reputations
When in the Snapchat app, a subscriber can click on Discover and see channels from
content publishers with high ranking Snapchat channels. The problem is that many of
these high ranking channels offer sexually oriented content. Therefore it is not just the
other users that can pose as a threat to the safety of children online but also of the
nature of the news articles that can be found on the site.
Social media reviews
Source: https://www.knowyourapps.com/reviews/instagram-review/
‘The downside to this, of course, is that it takes away much of the simplicity which
originally made Instagram so appealing. You might think you’re happy with a picture,
but then when you upload it, you may find yourself obsessing over whether a tilt shift
or additional contrast are required to really bring your latte to life. But if you can
master the balance between sepia-toned and psychedelic, these new tools will
encourage you to spend more time on Instagram.’ Evidently with new features
constantly being implemented in competitors, Instagram and Snpachat they are
constantly enticing users to spend more time on the platform by playing with various
different elements.
Parents also should know that, on Instagram, photos and videos are public by default
and can contain location data. So it's important for kids to use privacy settings to limit
their audience.
Conclusion
To conclude, this learning objective was about analyzing the way in which different social media platforms
operate and function. It is clear that between different platforms the target audience is slightly different; each
platform has its own way of appealing to different generations of people by drawing them into the platform.
For Snapchat this is the unique way to invite the young generation onto the platform almost effortlessly. With
the features provided it doesn’t appear so clear why it is popular. But amongst young people it is the most
common and most relied upon form of social media for young people. In terms of the gross usage across all
demographics, the media giant is still Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg's platforms has recently purchased Instagram
and is continuing to create Instagram as the largest image sharing social media platform on the internet. This
works to favor Facebook also due to the synergetic relationship between the two platforms. For example, when
signing into Instagram users have the option to sign in through Facebook, thus increasing brand recognition.
Moving forward to creating my own social media platform, the main takeaways from researching social media
giants is need the need to promote advertisements into to allow continued growth and development into the
infrastructure of the platform that I create. Furthermore another clear focus need to be upon the younger
generation who have the ability to create mass movement from one social media platform to another, as seen
with young people vacating from Facebook to Snapchat.

Hand Drawn Drafts (Sign up)
Hand Drawn Drafts (Home Page)
Hand Drawn Drafts - Final
This slide presents my final hand drawn drafts. I have chosen to go with Antipode as the final idea as the colour
scheme fits the target audience much better than the purple from Virtuoso. This design also fits the aim of the
design which is to ensure that the primary colour of red it made to stand out due to the contrast of the black.
Final idea one: Virtuoso
When looking at my three final ideas, one of the stand out plans is the idea behind
Virtuoso. The purpose of the platform is that it allows people to share images and
experiences with strangers and people that are interested in the same genre of
photography. Not to be confused with a dating platform this platform does however
contain an intimate sign up process. The purpose of this is to ensure that the matches
made between people will be accurate and will fuel interest between the matches made.
The platform allows users to search for a certain genre which they are interested in. If the
recipient agrees they are able to communicate via messaging or by sharing photos, GIFs or
even short videos. The idea is to allow people that have had experiences in a certain area
to share with others also from that place, or perhaps just interested in people stories or
even wanting to visit that place. The colour scheme that this platform will be using is a dark
midnight purple combined with a light grey. The house style will be kept simplistic and
modern in order to not only appeal to the younger target audience but also to stretch to
all adults. In terms of the competition the main competitors would most likely be
Instagram as some people would claim that it doesn’t what Instagram can. However the
concept is new and has potential to become attractive and interesting to young people. In
relation to socio-economic needs this social media platform would appeal to C1-E initially
due to the style of the platform since the house style would appeal more to the younger
generation as supposed to the older people.
Final idea two: Antipode
Another one of my final ideas is Antipode. This social media platform is a platform that attempts to bring
forums back into the modern era. With similar roots to Reddit this platform will primarily appeal to users aged
between 16-30; however it has the ability to appeal to demographics due to it’s accessibility and design. The
likening to Reddit draws from the fact that pretty much anything anybody can think about has it’s own area
within the platform where people with similar interests can share their thoughts, experiences, knowledge,
photos and videos. Within the competitor, Reddit this is named ‘Sub-reddits’ this allows users to find their
passion hobby and factors that fuels their existence whether that be cooking, cars, gaming or photography
there is a sector under the site. The front page of the site will feature the most viewed and interacted with
posts from that calendar day. Once users have customized their desired areas that they want to follow they will
then see a custom homepage that has the subscribed to areas that they wish to explore. This allows users to
explore posts similar to their own or even just explore the areas which interest them the most. The purpose
would not be so distinct as other social media platforms; as often the purpose of the social media sites is to
keep people up to date. Whereas Antipode focuses on allow people to post things that are relevant to that
particular site or area.
I have chosen Antipode as my final idea as finally it will provide a rivalry to Reddit since there has not yet been
a site able to contest it in relation to its globally recognized ability to connect people together. Furthermore
this site has capability of reinventing the forum sector of the internet.
Colour Scheme and logo
AntipodeFont: Cocogoose
Here you can see the font and logo
that will be used on my app. The
colour scheme has stayed true with
the initial plan from the mind map
which was to include red, black and
grey into the colour scheme in
order to create a brand new range
of colours that have not yet been
used in another popular social
media site. In terms of the font I
went for a style called ‘Cocogoose’
with the name itself it suggests that
the target audience are all different
and unique. The style is simplistic
and allow for a modern design for
the social media platform which will
primarily target smartphone users
of all ages.
Initial designs (Antipode)
Initially it appeared a good idea to stick
to the first plans of creating a clean and
simplistic login page. However it
appears that this plan didn’t really
come to life when created in
Photoshop, this is because the theory of
placing limited ‘clutter’ on the front
page didn’t really work as certain
aspects need to be included. This is
especially from a legal point of view as
‘Privacy’ and ‘About Us’ have no feature
on this main page. Also with the very
dark background it makes it increasingly
difficult to make the elements on the
backdrop stand out whilst still sticking
to the colour scheme of red black and
grey. Moreover the slogan should also
find a way to be better integrated into
the front page by serving more of a
purpose.
Virtuoso (Alternate Idea draft)Initial idea
The idea presented above is the alternate idea that I have created to Antipode. Using a very different colour scheme
to Antipode, Virtuoso uses a rather bright purple to attract the attention of the key demographic and creating a
lasting memory due to the abstract colour choice.
Virtuoso (Alternate Idea draft)Final idea
This slide presents the final idea for Virtuoso. The previous design idea did not follow the initial plan to have a dark
purple as the background colour, thus meaning that the proposed platform appeared too dark. This is the final
design that is matching of the hand drawn draft and the initial ideas presented in the mind map. The platform using
a dark background colour which brightens the logo in order to make it memorable.
Final Designs (Antipode)
The slide of screenshots presents the final design ideas for Antipode. It appears that the proposed colours of greys,
black and red has worked effortlessly; as the dark background makes red logo stand out perfectly. This is important
as it makes the logo stand out, thus increasing brand recognition as users will remember what the logo is and are
therefore more likely to return to the social media platform and recommend it to their friends.
Chosen ideas, Antipode
Despite having made two separate ideas for the my social media idea. The stronger idea appears to be, Antipode;
this is due to the strong colour scheme which has the ability to enable the logo to stand out. This is further the
chosen design due to the modern simplistic theme of the login page, this is because it makes the platform appear
young and trendy. This is useful because my social media platform is serving as a rival to Reddit which is the largest
online forum and discussion platform on the internet. This further is important as it means that my colour scheme
will allow the platform to appeal to a greater range of people. Therefore it has the potential to appeal to the
younger generation, which is currently not the primary focus of the Reddit social media platform.
Conclusion
This particular LO was about drawing from planning documents, initial sketches and primitive work to be able
to create two final drafts that are capable of being competitive social media products. I came to the conclusion
that Antipode should be the final idea due to capability of existing in the current and future market of social
media platforms. This is not only because of the colour schemes and house styles incorporated throughout the
design; but rather the thought that is has the ability to appeal to a wider target audience than the competitor
or Reddit. This is because it means that my final product will be able to appeal to the younger generation and
demonstrate to them that the forums and users voted posts are the best way to not only view new national
and global news. Whilst also provided thousands of areas for generally social and recreational posts.
Furthermore, I feel as though Antipode has a better potential of appealing to the target audience of 16-30 year
olds as they are able to understand the intentions behind the platform. Starting with the colour scheme which
is simplistic and modern, to the way in which the site functions and operated. The aim of the platform is to
appeal to all types of people, due to ‘Continuous innovation’ which is the slogan of the platform. Ultimately
demonstrating how all types of people with vast different interests have a place on this platform.
About the product
This social media platform is a platform that attempts to bring forums back into the modern
era. With similar roots to Reddit this platform will primarily appeal to users aged between
16-30; however it has the ability to appeal to demographics due to it’s accessibility and
design. The likening to Reddit draws from the fact that pretty much anything anybody can

people up to date. Whereas Antipode focuses on allow people to post things that are
relevant to that particular site or area. Furthermore, the purpose of the Antipode is to bring
all age ranges together. Although in concept this sound rather radical and ‘idiotic’ Reddit
have successfully appealed to a vast range of ages. This is because, Reddit in 2014 had a
median age range of 35.20; thus revealing that they have more of their that are of middle
class and working age using the site that younger people. Therefore revealing how the
predominant purpose is to appeal to a target audience that is often ignored when
innovating new products.

Revenue
Since my social media platform is a similar idea to Reddit; it appears reasonable to compare potential
revenues to the primitive stages of Reddit’s revenue. The below screenshot presents how much
revenue Reddit is generating from their ‘Reddit Gold’ this provides users with privileges such as
discounts and coupons from the sites partners which includes gaming companies, weekly giveaways.
This provides users with the respectably from other users on the site. Reddit charge $4 per month or
$30 per year for this perk; since it create success for business. I will be implemented a similar
influence into my social media platform; however it will be priced as $2 since my social media
platform will currently be the underdog in the business. Unlike Reddit my aim will be to include more
streams for revenue and will push for more advertising money. This is because in 2015 Reddit only
had a revenue stream of $10 million, thus demonstrating that I would have to implement a vastly
different strategy to enable considerable growth in the platform.

To begin understanding Copyright we must first identify what Copyright means; it’s the exclusive right to
make copies, license, and otherwise exploit a literary, musical, or artistic work, whether printed, audio or
video; This gives the author rights to the works until death and for 70 years following their death. The
Copyright law was first thought of in 1709 by the Statute of Anne; by 1911 The Copyright Act was passed.
The main aim of this was to reduce and hopefully eliminate plagiarism of an individuals work. When the
law was altered in 1988 it effectively means that writers and photographers have their own rights for
their content; this is particularly notable in modern day magazines such as Q and Mixmag you will be able
to find rights assigned to the photographer under the image. This is due to copyright reasons, however
this may not have been visible before the act was passed.
Copyright is prominent throughout all magazines, it is most notably identified on pages with
advertisements; external advertisers will typically include their Copyright tag at the bottom of their
advertisement to highlight how the content is owned by them. The small screenshot presented at the
bottom of the slide highlights how whilst not all posters will have a distinctive copyright tag, most will
ensure to include a form of identification. Typically this will include the masthead title, data or issues
title. Throughout the festival advertisement industry various unique ways of including the copyright tag
have been established; for examples some magazines will include the copyright tag next to their logo or
masthead to make it clear to consumers and external businesses that they should not be able to use their
content. Whilst other establishments will include a ‘R’ tag on their content to highlight that they are the
real company and not a fake or spin off organisation.

Legal and Ethical issues - Data Protection Act 1988
The DPA controls how your personal information is used by organisations, businesses or the government. This means that institutions that
have rights and access to your personal information must comply with tight laws to protect this sensitive data. Large businesses such as
Facebook, who have information banked about hundreds of millions of people are constantly under fire about the way in which they store
and conceal personal data. This is because Facebook is such a large social media presence which is accessed globally meaning that millions of
users access the site regularly. This means that the company is endangered by hackers and advertisement agencies who are desperate to
obtain this information.
Laws:
• used fairly and lawfully
• used for limited, specifically stated purposes
• used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not excessive
• accurate
• kept for no longer than is absolutely necessary
• handled according to people’s data protection rights
• kept safe and secure
• not transferred outside the European Economic Area without adequate protection
There is stronger legal protection for more sensitive information, such as:
• ethnic background
• political opinions
• religious beliefs
• health
• sexual health
• criminal records

Legal and Ethical issues – Web Standards Project
Founded in 1998, The Web Standards Project (WaSP) fights for standards that
reduce the cost and complexity of development while increasing the accessibility
and long-term viability of any site published on the Web. We work with browser
companies, authoring tool makers, and our peers to deliver the true power of
standards to this medium.
Though leading browser makers have been involved in the creation of web
standards since W3C was formed, for many years compliance was observed in the
breach. By releasing browsers that failed to uniformly support standards,
manufacturers needlessly fragmented the Web, injuring designers, developers,
users, and businesses alike.
Since there are so many webpages to be found on the internet today, the purpose
of the Web Standards Project is to ensure that all webpages are functioning to the
highest quality and delivering what they promise to consumers and users across
the world.

Watermark
Watermarks are also widely used as a form
of identification; a watermark defines as a
faint design made in some paper during
manufacture that is visible when held
against the light and typically identifies the
maker. Watermarks in terms of
photographs and business documents is
particularly useful as it ensures that the
works of that creator is protected.
Watermarks are typically a form of
transparent text that take up part of the
page in order to highlight that the work
somebody is looking at is owned by an
external establishment.
The screenshot on the right demonstrates
an example of the one of the watermark
cost plans to ensure that the rightful owner
continues to pertain their own property.

Legal and Ethical issues - Impersonation
Types of misuse and common crimes on the web:
Misuse of Private Information
Creating a fake social media profile of a real person without their consent could
potentially infringe on this civil law. If the profile contains private information about
the person, such as: relationship status, sexual orientation, religious views, political
views or other disclosure of private information then it may amount to misuse of
private information. This is NOT a police matter and you should not report it to the
police.
Defamation
If the impersonator makes a false statement that damages the reputation of an
individual or business or exposes them to hatred, ridicule or avoidance then this could
be termed defamation. Remember that this is NOT a police matter and should not be
reported to the police.
Fraudulent Impersonation
If someone impersonates you online to illegally obtain money, goods or a service then
it is possible that this could account to fraud, which is a criminal offence. You should
report online fraud to Action Fraud.

Conclusion
This LO of the unit, take a more realistic approach to the production of a social media platform. It does so by
identifying how the platform is able to exist through targeting a certain audience. Furthermore the site
recognizes how in relation to budget the first year will struggle to create a profit; but rather I have focused on
different ways that the site is capable of existing in the long term. Through methods of creating revenue such
as including a version of ‘Reddit Gold’ which is a monthly subscription that users pay in order to obtain benefits
and respectability in and out of the platform. In relation to legal and ethical issues I have ensured that I have
considered way that the law could be of concern, not just for me running the social media platform. But also
for the users, there I will have set privacy and User agreements, in order to protect the users that are
frequently using my site in order to kept them safe from breaking laws.
Hand Drawn Drafts, Antipode
Drafts final, Antipode
The slide of screenshots presents the final design ideas for Antipode. It appears that the proposed colours of greys,
black and red has worked effortlessly; as the dark background makes red logo stand out perfectly. This is important
as it makes the logo stand out, thus increasing brand recognition as users will remember what the logo is and are
therefore more likely to return to the social media platform and recommend it to their friends.
Home page
The home page will be referred to as the ‘front page of the internet’ this is where posts which a
user may not know that they are interested in will be placed. This allows users to explore different
‘page’ which are a section of the social media platform that is entirely dedicated to that genre,
hobby, product, activity or type that allows users to engage with users that are as passionate as
themselves about the topic. The homepage is to viewed as a more interesting news site home page.
This is because, whilst it will report the news, posts that are at the top are there because they have
received the most ‘up votes.’ An ‘up vote’ is when a user like a post, agrees with it or what to share
it so more people see the content. Thus meaning that the front page of Antipode will be interesting
because it fuelled by the decision of the user by them recommending posts that are the most
interesting. So whilst the top posts may be topical and relevant to current world news; there is also
potential for the front page to have posts which are abstract and humorous.
Starred page
The starred section of the social media site is where users have the ability to save their
interested ‘pages’ which are areas of the social media platform that they are
interested in following. This means that users can get an overviews of posts that they
follow all on the one page. For example this could show cooking photos or Kayak
tutorials all on the same page, thus giving the user as taste for what posts are top out
of their followed pages before they go to a specific page. On the starred page users
also have the ability to sort posts by ‘top’, ‘new’ or ‘random.’ This provides a different
way of searching through posts and enables users to either find things easier. Or make
their searching time more interesting; this would be true if they selected ‘random’ as
it would show new posts, top posts and posts that they would not normally see on
their page as they would be towards the bottom.
Hot page
The hot page can be used in two different ways. Users have the ability to either look at
posts that are ‘hot’ (at the top of their pages.) Or they can filter it to find posts that
are popular yet are slightly different. This works as a passive way of letting users
explore the social media platform as they will be introduced to different posts by
being matched to ideas that they are interested in currently. The hot page also can
prove as useful as it saves users from going to a different page if they only want to
view the posts which are top out of the pages that they follow.
Growing page
The growing page is place which allows users to spot posts that are growing interest
and tell their friends about them before they became mainstream and everybody has
viewed them. This page will present posts that are rapidly receiving attention and will
more than likely become at the top of the most popular posts on the site. Again, users
have the option to either filter their own posts and find what is slowly becoming
popular amongst those; or they have the option to select all posts and find what is
slowly rising amongst the mainstream posts that all other users are finding to be
interesting.
Controversial page
Finally, the controversial page is where users can find posts which are causing a huge
debate or discussion. This could be posts where users don’t agree with what others
are saying and an organised debate is occurring. Or it could be simply a post with a
large amount of responses which is pushing the post to become popular and at the
forefront of the controversial section. There will often be a range of different posts
under this section as people will not be in agreement of almost anything, thus
meaning that there can be controversy with all posts made on Antipode.
Guidelines and conditions
With all social media platforms there are terms and conditions which state not only how the company will deal
with the users data. Also the terms and conditions state guidelines for the way in which users should be
behaving on the social media platform. This includes what posts are and are not appropriate for users to be
posting on their pages and onto other areas of the platform. Like all social media platforms my platform will
include a privacy policy which outlines the way in which users should behave whilst using the platform in order
to keep themselves safe from being banned from the platform; but more importantly facing legal issues such as
breaking current issues. This includes celebrities and even normal people who have been posting malicious
‘revenge porn’ which is a crude way of attacking a past partner by shaming them online.

Conclusion
To conclude, I have no finished and further developed my primary idea, Antipode. This idea revolves around
the re-imagination of forums and the interconnection of people based on a common interest or theme.
Throughout this LO I have detailed what content will be found on each of the main pages of the social media
platform such as, Homepage, Starred, Hot, Growing and Controversial to begin to inflict life into to plan of a
social media platform and make it appear more realistic.
Overall this unit was about analyzing different social media platforms of our own choice in order to work out
how they function; how they are able to create revenue across various different income streams; how social
media platforms comply with the law and how they enforce their users; the way in which social media
platforms themselves have begun to take more responsibility in the way in which the internet is policed by
dealing with issues that are appearing in the 21st century.
This newly found knowledge about the functionality of social media platforms has meant that I was able plan
comprehensively and create my own social media platform. This helped during my planning stages as I was
able to decipher which of my three initial ideas would be most suitable and capable of existing in the future,
providing competition to other social media platforms.

Twitter Overview Twitter hasbeen a huge market contender for a number of years now, after being founded in 2006 Twitter has only seen an incline in users ever since. This social media platform provides the means of producing a 140 character update or message of occurrences in people’s daily lives. Twitter gives people free reign to talk about almost whatever they are giving an opinion, elements of humor or even politics. Twitter is a site which is used by a vast range of people for a number of different purposes. Over my many years of being a user on Twitter I can testify to the fact there are a vast range of different communities on Twitter. The introduction of the use of the # this enables users to channel their tweet into a certain group or network of other users which share the same interests in the topic. The use of a Hash tag also ensures that the information that a user communicates isn’t taken out of context as this could lead to some users becoming pessimistic or even angry towards that user as they share alternative views. The screenshot displayed is a survey which was orchestrated by the American Press Institute with the purpose of finding out the different reasons or motives that people have for using Twitter. The main three results identified how users are firstly on twitter to to be alerted about breaking news the moment that it happens. The second reason was just to be notified by general news occurrences: whilst the third was referring to the users that are on Twitter to simply pass time. Evidently this suggests that there are a vast number of different reasons why users are on Twitter demonstrating how Twitter has expanded their platform to make it useful and desirable for a vast range of users with different intentions of how they want to use the platform. Twitter Purpose The purposeof Twitter is provide a platform which has the ability to allow people from across the globe to be able to stay in contact via an online platform. The Mission statement of Twitter is to ‘Our mission: To give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers.’ this demonstrates that they are focused upon making Twitter available for all users on a global scale, not taking into account ethnic background or religion. Twitter strives to create a community which allows users to find new users to befriend by recommending who to follow and incorporating an common interest tag through the use of a hashtag. In terms of the purpose of the platform of Twitter it is vastly dependent on the demographic of the user; notably a range of younger users migrated to twitter as it provided the means to communicate instantly, effectively and with various degrees of privacy which they can switch between. Notably twitter revolves around you profile being accessible by all other users on the network; the purpose of this being to inform your ‘followers’ which are people that have chosen to view you content on their newsfeed, of events or opinions which you pertain. One of the main purposes which is clear through the system of Twitter is that that exist to provide up to the minute news and relay it to the audience instantly. This is evident through the 2009-2010 Iranian election protest as there was no news coverage to the print based media giants of the UK such as the Telegraph and Mail. Instead of this the only way in which news could be discovered and accessed was via social media, the main source of which being Twitter. Due to the proficiency and mass information spread which Twitter caused it lead to the Iranian Government having to block websites such as Facebook and Twitter due to the issue it could cause with the presidential elections. This demonstrates the pure power of Twitter, also this backs up the fact that the purpose of Twitter is to provide the means to fast spreading ideas. Twitter Content Source: Twitterapp The house style for twitter has been notoriously white and blue for the last 12 years; this facilitates a clean and professional house style that does not change, despite the hundreds of interactivity and interface adjustments. The the last decade Twitter has made various market wise moves in order to place their product in a scenario that leads to multiple different uses for the platform. This has become most notable the last few years as Twitter has introduced a new segment named ‘Moments.’ The purpose of this is to collate various different form of news in to numerous forms of sub genres. This allows users to select to follow certain news providers such a Mail, Mirror and Telegraph on Twitter in order to follow them for updates on breaking stories. The screenshots which I have included to the right accurately demonstrates how this newly introduced element of Twitter is highly optimized and intended for users that are on the smartphone device. This is because a user has the ability to promptly access the latest stories by simply clicking on the tab with the lightning bolt as displayed on the screenshot to the far right. The first screenshot presents the homepage of each user’s twitter account when accessed from a smartphone device. This gives them the ability to quickly scroll through content and search for new information.

Twitter Content Source: Twitterapp http://pearanalytics.com/blog/2009/twitter-study-reveals-interesting-results-40-percent-pointless-babble/ Next it is important to investigate the forms of tweets which users compose from day to day. A market-research firm named Pear Analytics analyses around 2,000 tweets from the United States. The purpose of which is to identify the forms of media which is produced by different user. Notably the two main forms of content which is covered is 40% ‘Pointless babble’ with another 37% covering ‘Conversational’ topics. This evidently reveals how unlike other social media platforms such as Snapchat where the content is effectively the same for all users, Twitter is very different. This is because of the wide spread of users which have been discussed previously; it means that there are far more means and genres within the platform. In the modern world of today you can find various different trends from global news, bloggers and other smaller local means. Twitter is known to try to articulate the content that user’s view in order to meet their personal interests. Primitively in 2010 Twitter gave users the ability to follow certain sports, bands, events or organisations in order to receive desirable content on their social media platforms.

Twitter Target user/membership Source:https://www.brandwatch.com/blog/44-twitter-stats-2016/ http://uk.businessinsider.com/who-uses-twitter-2015-6 Twitter, in a very similar way to Facebook, Twitter is known for having a very wide demographic of people. The screenshot presented below demonstrates how generic stereotypes of social media user-ship are not entirely accurate. This being that typically people assume that only the young generation are the types of users on the platforms. However the graphic below, taken from UK Business Insider points out that under 18’s only constitute for 16% of the users on the site. The heavily weighted brackets come in the form of 18-29 years at 37% and 30-49 at 25%, thus showing that there is more older users than there is youth. Having said this, it is clear that the platform is well rounded and caters for all forms of users as there is such a wide spread in terms of the demographics.

But how do they make all this money when it’s free? Three money-making ad products: • Promoted tweets: Advertisers pay to have brief messages show up in users' stream of Twitter messages. They can use keyword targeting to reach specific users. Advertisers can also use a little bit of demographic targeting, although Twitter doesn't know as much about its users as Facebook does. Twitter gets paid when users engage with the promoted tweets (when they favorite, comment on, or retweet the ad). • Promoted trends: Twitter lists which topics are being talked about most on its platform. The trends vary by location, so Twitter's list of topics in the US might not be the same as the list in England, for example. Advertisers can pay to have a topic of their choice listed too. A promoted trend costs roughly $200,000 for a day of exposure on all US Twitter accounts, the New York Times reports. • Promoted accounts: If a brand wants more Twitter followers, it can pay to have its account recommended to Twitter users.

Legal and ethicalissues Source: https://research20atimperial.wordpress.com/compulsory-content/legal-ethical-issues/ An element of social media that is often overlooked and largely ignored is the terms and conditions of the platforms. Users should be made more aware about the security the their data and the tweets that they are outputting. This being since Twitter in the past has been criticized for selling data to law enforcement or governments. Many people were outraged that this was a breach of the their rights; however many users were given a shock when they found out the integrity of their data. Much like Facebook Twitter is largely criticized by their ability to allow users to express their own views with little regulation. This means that that often authorities are angered by a lack of co-operation and refusal to remove certain tweets and take down accounts. Since Twitter is accessed by such a diverse audience it is important to consider that often users will be stretching and testing the laws of Twitter. It is often used as a political medium as it provides politicians with the confidence to lash out to other candidates and policies that they disagree with. This is particularly prominent in recent times due to President Trumps common usage of Twitter to convey his views on political and social topics at the present time.

Purpose Source: https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/history-of-snapchat Snapchat isan Android and iOS app. It’s headed by co-founder Evan Spiegel. One of the core concepts of the app is that any pictures or videos or messages you send are only available for a short time before they become inaccessible. The temporary, or ephemeral, nature of the app is thought to encourage a more natural flow of interaction. Ephemeral, or disappearing, messaging has skyrocketed in popularity since Snapchat was introduced. In fact, since Snapchat's arrival to the social media scene, Facebook and Instagram have launched their own versions of some of Snapchat's most popular features. We've predicted that competition will continue to grow between Snapchat and other popular social networking apps as all the landscape continues to innovate new products to distinguish from one another. Roughly 150 million people use Snapchat every day, and they consume around 800 hours of video per second.

Sources of revenue Source:https://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-business-ideas/how-does-snapchat-make- money/ Mediums of creating revenue through Snapchat: • Snap Ads Snap ads are the foundation for the Snapchat advertising. They work by displaying a 10 second full screen video that are always relevant to other snaps. Unlike advertising in other social media networks these advertisements are interactive and users have the ability to swipe up and access more content. • Geofilters The idea of a Geofilter is to provide a way of capturing and sharing a moment whilst contextualizing your geographical location to your followers. This feature means you no longer need to provide details manually; they are encouraged to produce user-generated content and share it their social circles. If businesses and locations want a Geofilter then they have to create it themselves and submit it to snapchat. Furthermore, the predominant way that Snapchat has the ability to create revenue from these filters is by charging $5 for a coverage of 20,000 square feet, this works out as equivalent to a small sized office. How the other hand the maximum area that can be purchased is 5 million square feet which works out to a few blocks. Geo features are not permanent either; this means that businesses or locations essentially rent the right to have their logo or area promoted for a certain amount of time. Individuals can also pay for temporary Geofilters on events such as birthdays and weddings, thus revealing how the revenue that Snapchat have the ability to create is proportional to the usership and the respectability of large businesses who appreciate their influence.

Sources of revenue Source:https://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.net/blog/web-business-ideas/how-does-snapchat-make- money/ Mediums of creating revenue through Snapchat: • Sponsored Lens Filters In a similar way to how Snapchat obtains revenue from geofilters it can do the same with sponsored lens filters. This is because it also provides companies with the opportunity to create their own lens filters when in that specific catchment area. An example of this is when eating at popular restaurants such as McDonalds and KFC they have specific lens that promote their brand. • Discover Another feature which isn’t as popular but is continuing to grow is the discovery page. Here you can find publishers such as Buzzfeed, People and Cosmopolitan. It is currently unclear as to how much companies are charging for businesses to allow other companies to post their content. Since it has 20 big name publishers with the company it is likely that they are generating a considerable sum for this business to be promoted. • Sports Partnerships In recent history SnapChat has partnered with sports organizations such as the NHL, NFL and MLB in order to allow both of the businesses to benefit.

Legal and Ethicalissues Source: https://lawstreetmedia.com/news/the-dark-side-of-snapchat/ Although there are overwhelming positives with the way in which Snapchat operates in the way in which it allows users to be in contact with people across the globe without any hassles of economic strings attached. Typically the app is used to quick simple and easy, but often silly communication between friends. This can come in the form of pet pictures, selfies or just life situation updates. Although, despite this where there is a large membership of various different people all interconnected together there will always be ethical and racial issues. Snapchat has received criticism for essentially making “sexting” easier and more accessible to harmful users. This is because images disappear leaving no trace of the damage that the image could have caused. Therefore making it increasingly hard to catch these often violent internet sex pests as victims are too concerned to screenshot the images as it would notify the one who is sending or requesting the images. The truth of the matter is that teens will always push the envelope, and science tells us that they’re quite not as good at making sound decisions as adults. There have been numerous different cases of sex pests on different social media platforms that are taken to court and given prison sentences. Often these internet criminals will claim that social media has the power to make people feel as though they are empowered by the anonymity that the social media platform provides.

Purpose Source: https://www.lifewire.com/what-is-instagram-3486316 In 2010Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger co-founded Instagram. Instagram has and will continue to grow due to the ever expanding industry of mobile photography that has largely allowed image to be captured on mobile devices that 15-20 years ago could not have been captured on the highest quality camera that money can buy. Instagram is a social networking app made for sharing photos and videos from a smartphone. Similar to Facebook or Twitter, everyone who creates an Instagram account has a profile and a news feed. When you post a photo or video on Instagram, it will be displayed on your profile. Other users who follow you will see your posts in their own feed. Likewise, you'll see posts from other users whom you choose to follow. The name "Instagram" comes from the words "instant" and "telegram“ with the purpose of letting people know that they have the freedom to post an image wherever they are in the world. Instagram was bought out in 2012 by Mark Zuckerberg’s giant, Facebook for a sum of USD$1 billion. Initially it was thought that aim of this move would be to purchase the brand simply to shut down and eliminate the competition. However Zuckerberg has made it increasingly clear that they are invested and "committed to building and growing Instagram independently, "thus demonstrating how Instagram will continue to grow and develop into the future of social media.

Therefore demonstrating the advertisements that companies include to their platform has the capability to prove to be really effective via image form by reaching the younger generation. Over 90% of the 150 million people on Instagram are under the age of 35, which makes it an attractive platform for many apparel, entertainment, and media brands focused on the 18- to 34-year-old age bracket. Despite the application being available on the mobile format for a number of different years extra. Currently users divide neatly at a 50/50 benchmark in terms of Android vs Apple devices. Furthermore it appears that Instagram is more widely used urban areas at 17% as supposed to rural areas at 11%. Unlike other social media platforms Instagram has proven to be based on the ethos of quality not quantity as Instagram only accounts for 7% of daily uploaded images amongst the top four image sharing platforms. Therefore depicting that the trend amongst young people is that they post high quality images.

Many new features were introduced, many features were copied and advertisements were included in many of them. October 3, 2013 – Instagram Announced to add advertising to its platform. December 12, 2013 – Introduced Direct, a feature that allows users to send photos to specific people. August 2, 2016 – Introduced Stories, a feature copied from Snapchat, which let users upload photos and videos as their instagram story which automatically expires after 24 hours. Or that their idea is completely new when in reality they entirely copied the other businesses idea. However, when it came to the head of Instagram, Kevin Systrom admits that he copied Snapchat with the idea of the face filters and stories that are implemented at the top of their page. He proclaims that Snapchat is ‘due all of the credit for the creation’ thus revealing that in order for Instagram to remain as one of the industry tops Instagram felt as though they had to adapt Snapchats style in order to not only continue to grow, but widen their age range of user and membership. Further legal issues have arisen due to explicit and racially questionable posts that are often found on the explore page or even on peoples main feed. To combat the issue of using finding sexually explicit or even harmful images Instagram has no input a sensor that has the ability to detect images with blood and gore, whilst still managing to blur out images of nudity.

Towards the end of 2014 the damage that social media was having on teenagers started to become apparent. Studies have revealed that ‘teenagers feel the need to be available 24/7, resulting with anxiety and depression.’ Teenagers are invested in the networks that 1 in 5 will wake up during the night to check on the platforms. Severe damage has been discovered in the sleep that teenagers are receiving as a result of the dependency on social media. As a standard teenagers require more sleep than adults; the recommended requirement for teenagers is that they receive 9.5 hours of sleep whereas on average many young adults are only getting 7 hours sleep. More studies are increasingly revealing that social media has more damaging effects on teenage girls vastly disproportionately to teenage boys. ‘Teenage girls face the pressures to look perfect, have the perfect body and be popular on social media platforms.’ This has the ability to damage the these young people develop into successful individuals as they are more concerned of the thoughts of others as supposed focusing on their careers and life purposes.

Pay per click Source:https://moz.com/blog/everything-you-need-to-know-about-sponsored-content Pay-Per-Click Advertising is a form of advertising which witnesses search engines such as Yahoo and the global powerhouse of Google to allow businesses to buy listings so that they will be at the top of the search results. This increases the likelihood of this web URL being selected by a user. Businesses will be charged a certain amount proportional to the amount of visits that sites obtains due to the link placed at the top of search results. In terms of the revenue that the likes of Google generates, if one widget is at $0.20 and 100 people visit the site via this method then therefore a revenue of $20 would be created for the search engine. This modern advertising technique has been employed to attempt to provide a new way of advertising products. This is because traditional methods of placing advertisements at the edge of a website has passed since, internet users are fully aware that the sites are advertising fake and ‘knock-off’ products.

Personal recommendations: Since many young people are skeptical when it comes to believing in advertising to be true and beneficial. Many will rely upon personal recommendations. This leaves children open to sexual harassment, manipulation, deception and abuse. Research has highlighted how children become open to: -Cyber bullying -Sexual Predators -Pornography -Damaged Reputations When in the Snapchat app, a subscriber can click on Discover and see channels from content publishers with high ranking Snapchat channels. The problem is that many of these high ranking channels offer sexually oriented content. But if you can master the balance between sepia-toned and psychedelic, these new tools will encourage you to spend more time on Instagram.’ Evidently with new features constantly being implemented in competitors, Instagram and Snpachat they are constantly enticing users to spend more time on the platform by playing with various different elements. Conclusion To conclude, thislearning objective was about analyzing the way in which different social media platforms operate and function. It is clear that between different platforms the target audience is slightly different; each platform has its own way of appealing to different generations of people by drawing them into the platform. For Snapchat this is the unique way to invite the young generation onto the platform almost effortlessly. With the features provided it doesn’t appear so clear why it is popular. But amongst young people it is the most common and most relied upon form of social media for young people. In terms of the gross usage across all demographics, the media giant is still Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg's platforms has recently purchased Instagram and is continuing to create Instagram as the largest image sharing social media platform on the internet. This works to favor Facebook also due to the synergetic relationship between the two platforms. For example, when signing into Instagram users have the option to sign in through Facebook, thus increasing brand recognition. Moving forward to creating my own social media platform, the main takeaways from researching social media giants is need the need to promote advertisements into to allow continued growth and development into the infrastructure of the platform that I create. Furthermore another clear focus need to be upon the younger generation who have the ability to create mass movement from one social media platform to another, as seen with young people vacating from Facebook to Snapchat.

Hand Drawn Drafts- Final This slide presents my final hand drawn drafts. I have chosen to go with Antipode as the final idea as the colour scheme fits the target audience much better than the purple from Virtuoso. This design also fits the aim of the design which is to ensure that the primary colour of red it made to stand out due to the contrast of the black.
  • 41.
Final idea one:Virtuoso When looking at my three final ideas, one of the stand out plans is the idea behind Virtuoso. The purpose of the platform is that it allows people to share images and experiences with strangers and people that are interested in the same genre of photography. Not to be confused with a dating platform this platform does however contain an intimate sign up process. The purpose of this is to ensure that the matches made between people will be accurate and will fuel interest between the matches made. The platform allows users to search for a certain genre which they are interested in. If the recipient agrees they are able to communicate via messaging or by sharing photos, GIFs or even short videos. The idea is to allow people that have had experiences in a certain area to share with others also from that place, or perhaps just interested in people stories or even wanting to visit that place. The colour scheme that this platform will be using is a dark midnight purple combined with a light grey. The house style will be kept simplistic and modern in order to not only appeal to the younger target audience but also to stretch to all adults. In terms of the competition the main competitors would most likely be Instagram as some people would claim that it doesn’t what Instagram can. However the concept is new and has potential to become attractive and interesting to young people. In relation to socio-economic needs this social media platform would appeal to C1-E initially due to the style of the platform since the house style would appeal more to the younger generation as supposed to the older people.
  • 42.
Final idea two:Antipode Another one of my final ideas is Antipode. This social media platform is a platform that attempts to bring forums back into the modern era. With similar roots to Reddit this platform will primarily appeal to users aged between 16-30; however it has the ability to appeal to demographics due to it’s accessibility and design. The likening to Reddit draws from the fact that pretty much anything anybody can think about has it’s own area within the platform where people with similar interests can share their thoughts, experiences, knowledge, photos and videos. Within the competitor, Reddit this is named ‘Sub-reddits’ this allows users to find their passion hobby and factors that fuels their existence whether that be cooking, cars, gaming or photography there is a sector under the site. The front page of the site will feature the most viewed and interacted with posts from that calendar day. Once users have customized their desired areas that they want to follow they will then see a custom homepage that has the subscribed to areas that they wish to explore. This allows users to explore posts similar to their own or even just explore the areas which interest them the most. The purpose would not be so distinct as other social media platforms; as often the purpose of the social media sites is to keep people up to date. Whereas Antipode focuses on allow people to post things that are relevant to that particular site or area. I have chosen Antipode as my final idea as finally it will provide a rivalry to Reddit since there has not yet been a site able to contest it in relation to its globally recognized ability to connect people together. Furthermore this site has capability of reinventing the forum sector of the internet.

Colour Scheme andlogo AntipodeFont: Cocogoose Here you can see the font and logo that will be used on my app. The colour scheme has stayed true with the initial plan from the mind map which was to include red, black and grey into the colour scheme in order to create a brand new range of colours that have not yet been used in another popular social media site. In terms of the font I went for a style called ‘Cocogoose’ with the name itself it suggests that the target audience are all different and unique. The style is simplistic and allow for a modern design for the social media platform which will primarily target smartphone users of all ages.

Initial designs (Antipode) Initiallyit appeared a good idea to stick to the first plans of creating a clean and simplistic login page. However it appears that this plan didn’t really come to life when created in Photoshop, this is because the theory of placing limited ‘clutter’ on the front page didn’t really work as certain aspects need to be included. This is especially from a legal point of view as ‘Privacy’ and ‘About Us’ have no feature on this main page. Also with the very dark background it makes it increasingly difficult to make the elements on the backdrop stand out whilst still sticking to the colour scheme of red black and grey. Moreover the slogan should also find a way to be better integrated into the front page by serving more of a purpose.

Virtuoso (Alternate Ideadraft)Initial idea The idea presented above is the alternate idea that I have created to Antipode. Using a very different colour scheme to Antipode, Virtuoso uses a rather bright purple to attract the attention of the key demographic and creating a lasting memory due to the abstract colour choice.
  • 46.
Virtuoso (Alternate Ideadraft)Final idea This slide presents the final idea for Virtuoso. The previous design idea did not follow the initial plan to have a dark purple as the background colour, thus meaning that the proposed platform appeared too dark. This is the final design that is matching of the hand drawn draft and the initial ideas presented in the mind map. The platform using a dark background colour which brightens the logo in order to make it memorable.
  • 47.
Final Designs (Antipode) Theslide of screenshots presents the final design ideas for Antipode. It appears that the proposed colours of greys, black and red has worked effortlessly; as the dark background makes red logo stand out perfectly. This is important as it makes the logo stand out, thus increasing brand recognition as users will remember what the logo is and are therefore more likely to return to the social media platform and recommend it to their friends.

Chosen ideas, Antipode Despitehaving made two separate ideas for the my social media idea. The stronger idea appears to be, Antipode; this is due to the strong colour scheme which has the ability to enable the logo to stand out. This is further the chosen design due to the modern simplistic theme of the login page, this is because it makes the platform appear young and trendy. This is useful because my social media platform is serving as a rival to Reddit which is the largest online forum and discussion platform on the internet. This further is important as it means that my colour scheme will allow the platform to appeal to a greater range of people. Therefore it has the potential to appeal to the younger generation, which is currently not the primary focus of the Reddit social media platform.
  • 49.
Conclusion This particular LOwas about drawing from planning documents, initial sketches and primitive work to be able to create two final drafts that are capable of being competitive social media products. I came to the conclusion that Antipode should be the final idea due to capability of existing in the current and future market of social media platforms. This is not only because of the colour schemes and house styles incorporated throughout the design; but rather the thought that is has the ability to appeal to a wider target audience than the competitor or Reddit. This is because it means that my final product will be able to appeal to the younger generation and demonstrate to them that the forums and users voted posts are the best way to not only view new national and global news. Whilst also provided thousands of areas for generally social and recreational posts. Furthermore, I feel as though Antipode has a better potential of appealing to the target audience of 16-30 year olds as they are able to understand the intentions behind the platform. Starting with the colour scheme which is simplistic and modern, to the way in which the site functions and operated. The aim of the platform is to appeal to all types of people, due to ‘Continuous innovation’ which is the slogan of the platform. Ultimately demonstrating how all types of people with vast different interests have a place on this platform.

About the product Thissocial media platform is a platform that attempts to bring forums back into the modern era. The purpose would not be so distinct as other social media platforms; as often the purpose of the social media sites is to keep people up to date. Whereas Antipode focuses on allow people to post things that are relevant to that particular site or area. Furthermore, the purpose of the Antipode is to bring all age ranges together. Although in concept this sound rather radical and ‘idiotic’ Reddit have successfully appealed to a vast range of ages. This is because, Reddit in 2014 had a median age range of 35.20; thus revealing that they have more of their that are of middle class and working age using the site that younger people. Therefore revealing how the predominant purpose is to appeal to a target audience that is often ignored when innovating new products. Revenue Since my socialmedia platform is a similar idea to Reddit; it appears reasonable to compare potential revenues to the primitive stages of Reddit’s revenue. The below screenshot presents how much revenue Reddit is generating from their ‘Reddit Gold’ this provides users with privileges such as discounts and coupons from the sites partners which includes gaming companies, weekly giveaways. This provides users with the respectably from other users on the site. Reddit charge $4 per month or $30 per year for this perk; since it create success for business. I will be implemented a similar influence into my social media platform; however it will be priced as $2 since my social media platform will currently be the underdog in the business. Unlike Reddit my aim will be to include more streams for revenue and will push for more advertising money. This is because in 2015 Reddit only had a revenue stream of $10 million, thus demonstrating that I would have to implement a vastly different strategy to enable considerable growth in the platform. To begin understandingCopyright we must first identify what Copyright means; it’s the exclusive right to make copies, license, and otherwise exploit a literary, musical, or artistic work, whether printed, audio or video; This gives the author rights to the works until death and for 70 years following their death. The Copyright law was first thought of in 1709 by the Statute of Anne; by 1911 The Copyright Act was passed. The main aim of this was to reduce and hopefully eliminate plagiarism of an individuals work. When the law was altered in 1988 it effectively means that writers and photographers have their own rights for their content; this is particularly notable in modern day magazines such as Q and Mixmag you will be able to find rights assigned to the photographer under the image. This is due to copyright reasons, however this may not have been visible before the act was passed. Copyright is prominent throughout all magazines, it is most notably identified on pages with advertisements; external advertisers will typically include their Copyright tag at the bottom of their advertisement to highlight how the content is owned by them. The small screenshot presented at the bottom of the slide highlights how whilst not all posters will have a distinctive copyright tag, most will ensure to include a form of identification. Typically this will include the masthead title, data or issues title. Throughout the festival advertisement industry various unique ways of including the copyright tag have been established; for examples some magazines will include the copyright tag next to their logo or masthead to make it clear to consumers and external businesses that they should not be able to use their content. Whilst other establishments will include a ‘R’ tag on their content to highlight that they are the real company and not a fake or spin off organisation. Legal and Ethicalissues - Data Protection Act 1988 The DPA controls how your personal information is used by organisations, businesses or the government. This means that institutions that have rights and access to your personal information must comply with tight laws to protect this sensitive data. Large businesses such as Facebook, who have information banked about hundreds of millions of people are constantly under fire about the way in which they store and conceal personal data. This is because Facebook is such a large social media presence which is accessed globally meaning that millions of users access the site regularly. This means that the company is endangered by hackers and advertisement agencies who are desperate to obtain this information. Laws: • used fairly and lawfully • used for limited, specifically stated purposes • used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not excessive • accurate • kept for no longer than is absolutely necessary • handled according to people’s data protection rights • kept safe and secure • not transferred outside the European Economic Area without adequate protection There is stronger legal protection for more sensitive information, such as: • ethnic background • political opinions • religious beliefs • health • sexual health • criminal records Source: https://www.gov.uk/data-protection/the-data-protection-act

Legal and Ethicalissues – Web Standards Project Founded in 1998, The Web Standards Project (WaSP) fights for standards that reduce the cost and complexity of development while increasing the accessibility and long-term viability of any site published on the Web. We work with browser companies, authoring tool makers, and our peers to deliver the true power of standards to this medium. Though leading browser makers have been involved in the creation of web standards since W3C was formed, for many years compliance was observed in the breach. By releasing browsers that failed to uniformly support standards, manufacturers needlessly fragmented the Web, injuring designers, developers, users, and businesses alike. Since there are so many webpages to be found on the internet today, the purpose of the Web Standards Project is to ensure that all webpages are functioning to the highest quality and delivering what they promise to consumers and users across the world. Watermark Watermarks are alsowidely used as a form of identification; a watermark defines as a faint design made in some paper during manufacture that is visible when held against the light and typically identifies the maker. Watermarks in terms of photographs and business documents is particularly useful as it ensures that the works of that creator is protected. Watermarks are typically a form of transparent text that take up part of the page in order to highlight that the work somebody is looking at is owned by an external establishment. The screenshot on the right demonstrates an example of the one of the watermark cost plans to ensure that the rightful owner continues to pertain their own property. Legal and Ethicalissues - Impersonation Types of misuse and common crimes on the web: Misuse of Private Information Creating a fake social media profile of a real person without their consent could potentially infringe on this civil law. If the profile contains private information about the person, such as: relationship status, sexual orientation, religious views, political views or other disclosure of private information then it may amount to misuse of private information. This is NOT a police matter and you should not report it to the police. Defamation If the impersonator makes a false statement that damages the reputation of an individual or business or exposes them to hatred, ridicule or avoidance then this could be termed defamation. Remember that this is NOT a police matter and should not be reported to the police. Fraudulent Impersonation If someone impersonates you online to illegally obtain money, goods or a service then it is possible that this could account to fraud, which is a criminal offence. Conclusion This LO ofthe unit, take a more realistic approach to the production of a social media platform. It does so by identifying how the platform is able to exist through targeting a certain audience. Furthermore the site recognizes how in relation to budget the first year will struggle to create a profit; but rather I have focused on different ways that the site is capable of existing in the long term. Through methods of creating revenue such as including a version of ‘Reddit Gold’ which is a monthly subscription that users pay in order to obtain benefits and respectability in and out of the platform. In relation to legal and ethical issues I have ensured that I have considered way that the law could be of concern, not just for me running the social media platform. But also for the users, there I will have set privacy and User agreements, in order to protect the users that are frequently using my site in order to kept them safe from breaking laws.

Home page The homepage will be referred to as the ‘front page of the internet’ this is where posts which a user may not know that they are interested in will be placed. This allows users to explore different ‘page’ which are a section of the social media platform that is entirely dedicated to that genre, hobby, product, activity or type that allows users to engage with users that are as passionate as themselves about the topic. The homepage is to viewed as a more interesting news site home page. This is because, whilst it will report the news, posts that are at the top are there because they have received the most ‘up votes.’ An ‘up vote’ is when a user like a post, agrees with it or what to share it so more people see the content. Thus meaning that the front page of Antipode will be interesting because it fuelled by the decision of the user by them recommending posts that are the most interesting. So whilst the top posts may be topical and relevant to current world news; there is also potential for the front page to have posts which are abstract and humorous.
  • 69.
Starred page The starredsection of the social media site is where users have the ability to save their interested ‘pages’ which are areas of the social media platform that they are interested in following. This means that users can get an overviews of posts that they follow all on the one page. For example this could show cooking photos or Kayak tutorials all on the same page, thus giving the user as taste for what posts are top out of their followed pages before they go to a specific page. On the starred page users also have the ability to sort posts by ‘top’, ‘new’ or ‘random.’ This provides a different way of searching through posts and enables users to either find things easier. Or make their searching time more interesting; this would be true if they selected ‘random’ as it would show new posts, top posts and posts that they would not normally see on their page as they would be towards the bottom.
  • 70.
Hot page The hotpage can be used in two different ways. Users have the ability to either look at posts that are ‘hot’ (at the top of their pages.) Or they can filter it to find posts that are popular yet are slightly different. This works as a passive way of letting users explore the social media platform as they will be introduced to different posts by being matched to ideas that they are interested in currently. The hot page also can prove as useful as it saves users from going to a different page if they only want to view the posts which are top out of the pages that they follow.
  • 71.
Growing page The growingpage is place which allows users to spot posts that are growing interest and tell their friends about them before they became mainstream and everybody has viewed them. This page will present posts that are rapidly receiving attention and will more than likely become at the top of the most popular posts on the site. Again, users have the option to either filter their own posts and find what is slowly becoming popular amongst those; or they have the option to select all posts and find what is slowly rising amongst the mainstream posts that all other users are finding to be interesting.
  • 72.
Controversial page Finally, thecontroversial page is where users can find posts which are causing a huge debate or discussion. This could be posts where users don’t agree with what others are saying and an organised debate is occurring. Or it could be simply a post with a large amount of responses which is pushing the post to become popular and at the forefront of the controversial section. There will often be a range of different posts under this section as people will not be in agreement of almost anything, thus meaning that there can be controversy with all posts made on Antipode.

Guidelines and conditions Withall social media platforms there are terms and conditions which state not only how the company will deal with the users data. Also the terms and conditions state guidelines for the way in which users should be behaving on the social media platform. This includes what posts are and are not appropriate for users to be posting on their pages and onto other areas of the platform. Like all social media platforms my platform will include a privacy policy which outlines the way in which users should behave whilst using the platform in order to keep themselves safe from being banned from the platform; but more importantly facing legal issues such as breaking current issues. This includes celebrities and even normal people who have been posting malicious ‘revenge porn’ which is a crude way of attacking a past partner by shaming them online. Conclusion To conclude, Ihave no finished and further developed my primary idea, Antipode. This idea revolves around the re-imagination of forums and the interconnection of people based on a common interest or theme. Throughout this LO I have detailed what content will be found on each of the main pages of the social media platform such as, Homepage, Starred, Hot, Growing and Controversial to begin to inflict life into to plan of a social media platform and make it appear more realistic. Overall this unit was about analyzing different social media platforms of our own choice in order to work out how they function; how they are able to create revenue across various different income streams; how social media platforms comply with the law and how they enforce their users; the way in which social media platforms themselves have begun to take more responsibility in the way in which the internet is policed by dealing with issues that are appearing in the 21st century. This newly found knowledge about the functionality of social media platforms has meant that I was able plan comprehensively and create my own social media platform. This helped during my planning stages as I was able to decipher which of my three initial ideas would be most suitable and capable of existing in the future, providing competition to other social media platforms.
