UNDERSTANDING
AND LOCATING
THE THESIS
STATEMENT
By: Bernie L. Fuentes
Learning Objectives:
1. define thesis statement;
2. identify the various techniques in locating
thesis statement; and,
3. formulate thesis statement of the texts.
LET’S SELF-AUDIT
Direction: After reading the statements,
choose whether you do it USUALLY,
SOMETIMES, SELDOM or NEVER. Do this as
objectively as possible.
1
I look for the main idea
of a text to understand
what it is about.
2
I read a paragraph
carefully to get its topic
sentence.
3
I use the title to make
inferences about the
purpose of the text.
4
I look for signal words
or phrases to look for
the main idea.
5
I observe the writing
pattern of the author to
find the topic sentence in
the paragraphs.
6
I look for the thesis
statement to evaluate the
author’s arguments.
7
I summarize a text
based on its thesis
statement.
8
I write the main idea in
my own words to
understand the text
better.
9
I look for the topic
sentence by looking for
the sentence which
discusses the key word.
10
I look for the topic
sentence using the
details in the thesis
statement.

LET’S LEARN
THESIS STATEMENT
-it presents or describes the point of an
essay. In an academic text, the thesis
statement is usually presented in the
abstract or executive summary or found at
the last part of the introduction. It is written
in declarative sentence.
 It is a statement that summarizes your
topic and declares your position on it.
 tells the reader how you will interpret the
significance of the subject matter under
discussion.
 is a road map for the paper; in other
words, it tells the reader what to expect
from the rest of the paper.
 It is the central idea of a multiple-
paragraph composition. It is one sentence
summary that guides, controls and unifies
ideas when writing a paper. In simple
terms, all the other ideas present in an
essay revolve around the thesis statement.
 It focuses your ideas into one or two sentences.
It should present the topic of your paper and
also make a comment about your position in
relation to the topic. Your thesis statement
should tell your reader what the paper is about
and also help guide your writing and keep your
argument focused.
 In short, it is the main idea of an essay.
SAMPLE ABSTRACT
SAMPLE INTRODUCTION
REMEMBER
In some cases in academic texts, thesis
statement located at the last part of the
introduction is replaced with a purpose
statement. Unlike the thesis statement, the
purpose statement is introduced by signal
phrases that announces the purpose, scope,
or direction of the text as well as its focus.
SIGNAL PHRASES
 This study examined…
 This paper examines…
 The aim of this essay is to…
 This paper begins with…
 In this paper, I hope to…
 The primary objective of this paper is to…
 The purpose of this essay is to…
STRATEGIES and
TIPS IN LOCATING
THE THESIS
STATEMENT
1.
Read the title of the text and make
inferences on its purpose.
2.
If the text has no abstract or
executive summary, read the first
few paragraphs as the thesis is
usually located there.
3.
In other cases, you may also check
the conclusion where the authors
sum up, and review their main
points.
4
A thesis statement generally consists of two
parts: your topic, and then the analysis,
explanation(s), or assertion(s) that you're
making about the topic. The kind of thesis
statement you write will depend on what
kind of paper you're writing.
5
In some kinds of writing, such as narratives or
descriptive essays, a thesis statement is less
important, but you may still want to provide
some kind of statement in your first
paragraph that helps to guide your reader
through your paper.
6
A thesis statement is a very specific
statement -- it should cover only what you
want to discuss in your paper and be
supported with specific evidence. The scope
of your paper will be determined by the
length of your paper and any other
requirements that might be in place.
7
Generally, a thesis statement appears at the
end of the first paragraph of an essay, so that
readers will have a clear idea of what to
expect as they read.
8
You can think of your thesis as a map or a
guide both for yourself and your audience, so
it might be helpful to draw a chart or picture
of your ideas and how they're connected to
help you get started.
9
As you write and revise your paper, it's okay
to change your thesis statement – sometimes
you don't discover what you really want to
say about a topic until you've started (or
finished) writing. Just make sure that your
final thesis statement accurately shows what
will happen in your paper.
LET’S PRACTICE
1
Children’s use of social media is a highly
debated issue. Parents are divided into two
on this issue. Many people think that social
media does not hurt children. Children should
not use social media because they are
influenced by seeing unreal lives.

Everyone has told a lie at one point, but as it
contradicts something we know to be true,
lies are always exposed, revealing the truth
beneath them. Macbeth learns this the hard
way. One theme in Macbeth by William
Shakespeare is that the truth will eventually
come out.

Nature holidays and sea holidays are quite
common holiday types. However, people
often can’t decide which one is more
enjoyable. Actually, the answer to this
question depends on what you expect. I think
a sea holiday should be preferred because
while you are on a sea holiday, you can also
be in touch with nature.

Books should not be read digitally because
there can be too much distraction. Reading
books digitally has become quite common in
recent years. This, unfortunately, reduces
the efficiency of the books. Any notification
is a distraction. That’s why we should prefer
to read the books directly.

A debate has been raised these days when we
are experiencing the Covid-19 process.
Distance education or better face-to-face
education? In fact, both methods have their
good and bad sides. It seems quite difficult to
choose. Face-to-face education should be
applied because it feels more realistic and
less distracting.

Editor's Notes

  • #16 Accomplishing something quickly but efficiently and accurately is one skill you will definitely find useful in life. This skill is also helpful in your academic classes, especially when you have to read various texts. One effective way of increasing your speed in reading is by finding the main idea or thesis statement of the text and the topic sentence of the paragraphs. If you can locate the thesis statement and the topic sentences, you don't have to read the entire text to get the key information you need. It will also give you an idea of the text and help you evaluate the author's arguments as you read.
