VILLA DESCRIPTION
VILLA 329 IN UBUD, BALI
Three kilometers to the south of Ubud, the cultural capital of Bali, in the quiet rural village of
Lodtunduh, is a secluded, romantic villa set against the verdant rice fields and the back drop of Mount
Batukau in the distance. With five bedrooms, an artist ᤀ猀 studio and a bale, this beautiful villa built

privacy and luxury. The moment you arrive at the villa you are welcomed to a world of elegance and
tranquility far from the noisy, crowded beach hotels and busy roads of Bali.
The Villa
Built as a family home comprising four pavilions, an artist ᤀ猀 studio and a meditation/massage bale, this
villa is designed for privacy as well as communal living in the Balinese style. All pavilions have
traditional alang alang roofs and terrazzo floors. In the main pavilion and the master bedroom pavilion,
all living areas are open to the views of the rice field and the ponds that surround the property. The
furnishings in the villa are deliberately simple and elegant allowing the beauty of our surroundings to
complete the decoration.
The Main Pavilion
The main pavilion comprises kitchen, dining room, living room, library, bathroom and television
room. The kitchen is fully equipped in western style and is staffed by two Balinese women trained in
Western and Asian cuisines. The dining room is an extension of the kitchen separated by an
architecturally designed glass cabinet. A solid piece of mahogany measuring 5 meters long seats
fourteen people comfortably and overlooks the reflecting pond on one side, and a bamboo planted
waterfall on the other. The living room area overlooks the rice fields with a comfortable seating area
built on terrazzo and covered with cushions decorated with Balinese cottons.
There is also a day bed for those afternoon siestas and a table and chairs for card games or breakfast by
the pool. A dramatic painting by Bali resident Wolfgang Peterson adorns the wall.Next to the living
room is a bathroom with shower and toilet. Like all the bathrooms in the villa, it is open to the garden
and can be reached from both sides of the living room. Above the living room is a library/office space
with several cushions to read in a quiet place. Below the library is the only air-conditioned room in the
house. The television room contains a music system and a DVD player with at least 100 DVD ᤀ猀
available for your viewing.
The Swimming Pool, Artist’s Studio and Bale
Beyond the main pavilion is the swimming pool. Built for laps, it is 25 meters long and five meters wide.
The pool was designed with an infinity edge that looks as if it is spilling over into the rice fields.
Alongside are sun loungers for lazing by the pool.At the south end of the pool is a bale that can be used

for many different purposes. Massage, meditation and yoga are just three of them. It also offers
welcome relief from the sun in the afternoon and is a natural stage for Gamelan or Wayang shadow
puppet performances.
At the north end, the Artist ᤀ猀 studio is a two level T-house, situated in the middle of the catch-basin for
the infinity pool. Downstairs, a small table can be raised to allow you to put your feet in the water as you
sit at the table. Upstairs has a built-in desk and bookshelves.
The owner is a writer and spends many hours overlooking the rice fields and the mountains in the
distance watching the villagers come and go about their daily tasks. Occasionally, they can be spotted
climbing the coconut trees to stop the coconuts from falling or to clean up the dead branches.
The Master Pavilion
Across the lily pond from the living room is the two-story master pavilion. On the ground floor is a
comfortable sitting room with a small couch and two chairs surrounding a coffee table, a long
mahogany bench and a long cabinet for storage. The back wall of the sitting room, hand carved by local
artists, is a mural depicting life in the village. Next to the sitting room is the bathroom. As you enter,
you are met by a small waterfall and koi fish pond. Two sinks are built against the wall, and a two person
stone tub lies next to the outdoor shower with yawning frog ᤀ猀 head protecting the shower head. A high
wall covered in fern and flowering plants gives you complete privacy.
Upstairs, a large bedroom overlooks the pool and the ricefields giving excellent views of the
extraordinary sunsets from the west of Bali. The comfortable, but firm California king-size mattress is
furnished in white and off-white cushions and duvet in silk and cotton. The romance of the mosquito
net billowing around the bed is further enhanced by the gold and pink organza curtains on each side of
the bed that sway gracefully when the winds blow. Behind the bed is a stone Buddha head at least three
hundred years old. The walls are louvered to allow air to circulate. All bedrooms have overhead fans and
no air conditioning because there is always a breeze off the rice-fields. In the winter we use our duvet at
night.
The Blue and Green Pavilion
This pavilion is a two bedroom and bathroom pavilion decorated in a shade of tropical green and deep
sea blue bedding and curtains. Downstairs, the bedroom extends out to the temple garden and koi

pond by way of sliding louvered and glass doors that open on all sides if desired. Next to the downstairs
bedroom is the shared bathroom with the room upstairs. Designed with a Japanese feel to it, the
bathroom has two sinks and a toilet under cover and an outdoor shower surrounded by bamboo.
Upstairs, the spacious bedroom is decorated in the same colors of green and blue and includes a desk
and chair for writing, and a small sofa for relaxing. All beds are American queen size beds giving good
support for your back.
The Red and Green Pavilion
Behind the master pavilion lies two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Decorated in Irish green, Balinese
Red and black, these two rooms are simply decorated with queen size beds and a desk and chair.
Attached to each room is a small bathroom with one sink and an outside shower. Each bathroom has the
same bamboo feature that can be found in the blue and green pavilion. On the east end of the pavilion,
the bedroom extends outwards with a wooden deck that looks onto the temple garden. On the west
end, the deck extends out towards the rice field and the sunset.
Staff
There are currently 10 English speaking staff. Two in the kitchen, four in housekeeping and laundry,
two for the pool and garden and two for security. The villa is staffed at all times.
Equipment
The maintenance of the villa is covered on site. All water is pumped from a well 120 meters below
ground guaranteeing availability and purity. All water systems that feed ponds and waterfalls are re-
circulated and purified by underground biological sewerage plant treatments. Hot water in each
bathroom is supplied by an immersion heater that is fueled by propane gas ensuring a constant amount
of hot water for baths and showers. The pool is salt-water treated. Electricity is supplied by a dedicated
3 phase mains feed.As of this date, there is no internet or ground telephone available at the villa, but
mobile phones are available for local use. We expect to have it available within the next year.
