Adventure, good company, and much
much more with Outdoors IrelandBY MARTINA NEE
Tired of the hustle and
bustle of jam-packed city
night life or meeting the
same old faces in your
local village pub? If you
are looking for a bit of
adventure, the great
outdoors, and the
opportunity to meet like-
minded people and maybe
more, then Outdoors
Ireland may have the
solution with its single
adventure weekend in
beautiful Killarney, Co
Kerry.
To be honest I was a bit
sceptical at first when
asked to take part in the
singles adventure
weekend but hey, she who
dares and all that. I
travelled down to
Killarney which is an
absolutely beautiful town
surrounded by a
mountainous and lake-
filled national park and
checked into the four star
Randles Court Hotel on
Muckross Road. The
spacious and luxurious
twin room I was booked
into certainly put me at
ease straight away. A
quick change, in
preparation for the night
walk, and I was down to
the lobby to meet the rest
of the group and Nathan
Kingerlee, who runs
Outdoors Ireland, an
adventure and training
business based in Co
Kerry.
Following an informal
group meeting we found
ourselves walking
through the national park
and getting to know each
other through fun team
building challenges. It
certainly breaks the ice
and you get over the initial
shyness while trying to
hoist your team-mate
through criss-crossed
ropes. It makes for some
hilarious moments. The
fun continued with a few
drinks flowing in the
hotel’s bar later that night
but not too much, of
course!
We were up, bright eyed
and bushy tailed on the
Saturday morning, ready
to tackle a bit of rock
climbing. Bring it on! The
lesson learnt this day was
that my coordination and
grip abilities were non-
existent, but a bit red-
faced I realised that it
doesn’t matter as this is
for all levels and the motto
here is give it a go and
have fun doing it. The
experience was made even
more enjoyable by the fact
that your team-mates,
who were strangers the
day before, were cheering
me on and the instructors
are experienced and so
friendly and patient,
which helps. I was
thankful to discover that I
was much better at the
abseiling. That’s the
beauty of this adventure
weekend, there is
something for everyone
and it is all about taking
part.
There was no rest for
the wicked as it was off to
the lakes for a spot of
kayaking. Passing by the
awe-inspiring 15th
century Ross Castle into
the beautiful Lough Leane
you can be forgiven for
nearly losing
concentration as it takes
your breath away. A little
nervous about kayaking?
So was I, but do not worry
as Nathan gives a tutorial
about correct kayaking
technics and constantly
keeps a watchful eye.
Despite a few hiccups, like
my kayak going in circles
(it took a while for me to
get the hang of this) it was
a really enjoyable day out
on the lakes stopping for a
break at Innisfallen Island
where the sixth century
abbey ruins lie. Nothing
like a bit of the outdoors to
work up an appetite which
was satisfied by a
scrumptious dinner back
at the hotel before a
Saturday night out on the
town.
After a night on the tiles
there is nothing like more
fresh air to clear the head
cob-webs and you
certainly get just that on
this trip with a hill walk
up Carrauntoohil on the
Sunday. The climb is
gentle enough, with
plenty of short stops along
the way to cater for all
levels, after all it is not a
race. The aim here is to
take in the beautiful sights
and enjoy the company of
your team mates before
heading back to the hotel
for final farewells.
There were a few aches
and pains but I could not
recommend the Outdoors
Ireland singles adventure
weekend enough as it is,
put simply, a chance to
take in the amazing
scenery that this country
of ours has been blessed
with, get the adrenaline
going, meet other people,
and above all have a good
time.
All transport, food, and
equipment is provided and
the organisers do
endeavour to make sure
there is a 50/50 split of
males and females with
age profiles of 26 to 45.
Price for a residential
weekend is €295 per
person which is based on
two nights’ twin room
accommodation, however
there is the choice of a
single-supplement of €50
per person. The price also
includes all the activities,
instructors, two healthy
breakfasts, two picnic
lunches, and one evening
meal. Collection from and
drop off to Killarney
train/bus station and
Kerry Airport are also
available upon request.
Upcoming dates for the
singles adventure
weekend are October 16
and 17, and December 4
and 5.
