Analysing Structured Scholarly Data Embedded in Web Pages
Web pages increasingly embed structured data in the form of
microdata, microformats and RDFa. Through efforts such as schema.org, such embedded markup have become prevalent, with current studies estimating an adoption by about 26% of all web pages. Similar to the early adoption of Linked Data principles by publishers, libraries and other providers of bibliographic data, such organisations have been among the
early adopters, providing an unprecedented source of structured data about scholarly works. Such data, however, is fundamentally different
from traditional Linked Data, by being very sparsely linked and consisting of a large amount of coreferences and redundant statements. So far, the scale and nature of embedded scholarly data on the Web has not been investigated. In this work, we provide a study on embedded scholarly data to answer research questions about the depth, syntactic and semantic characteristics and distribution of extracted data, thereby investigating challenges and opportunities for using embedded data as a structured knowledge graph of scholarly information.
Ranking Buildings and Mining the Web for Popular Architectural Patterns
Knowledge about the reception of architectural structures is crucial for architects and urban planners. Yet obtaining such information has been a challenging and costly activity. However, with the advent of the Web, a vast amount of structured and unstructured data describing architectural structures has become available publicly. This includes information about the perception and use of buildings (for instance, through social media), and structured information
about the building’s features and characteristics (for instance, through public Linked Data). Hence, first mining (i) the popularity of buildings from the social Web and (ii) then correlating such rankings with certain features of
buildings, can provide an efficient method to identify successful architectural patterns. In this paper we propose an approach to rank buildings through the automated mining of Flickr metadata. By further correlating such rankings with
building properties described in Linked Data we are able to identify popular patterns for particular building types (airports, bridges, churches, halls, and skyscrapers). Our approach combines crowdsourcing with Web mining techniques
to establish influential factors, as well as ground truth to evaluate our rankings. Our extensive experimental results depict that methods tailored to specific structure types allow an accurate measurement of their public perception.
Training Workers for Improving Performance in Crowdsourcing Microtasks
With the advent and growing use of crowdsourcing labor markets for a variety of applications, optimizing the quality of results produced is of prime importance. The quality of the results produced is typically a function of the performance of crowd workers. In this paper, we investigate the notion of treating crowd workers as ‘learners’ in a novel learning environment. This learning context is characterized by a short-lived learning phase and immediate application of learned concepts. We draw motivation from the desire of crowd workers to perform well in order to maintain a good reputation, while attaining monetary rewards successfully. Thus, we delve into training workers in specific microtasks of different types. We exploit (i) implicit training, where workers are provided training when they provide erraneous responses to questions with priorly known answers, and (ii) explicit training, where workers are required to go through a training phase before they attempt to work on the task itself. We evaluated our approach in 4 different types of microtasks with a total of 1200 workers, who were subjected to either one of the proposed training strategies or baseline case of no training. The results show that workers who undergo training depict an improvement in performance upto 5 %, and a reduction in the task completion time upto 41 %. Additionally, crowd training led to the elimination of malicious workers and a costs-benefit gain upto nearly 15%.

several challenges that require human intervention. While
there is an increase in the adoption of the crowdsourcing
paradigm as a solution, there are no established guidelines
or tangible recommendations for task design with respect
to key parameters such as task length, monetary incentive
and time required for task completion. In this paper, we
propose the tuning of these parameters based on our findings
from extensive experiments and analysis of ‘categorization’
tasks. We delve into the behavior of workers that consume
categorization tasks to determine measures that can make
task design more effective.

tackle problems requiring human intelligence. With the ever growing worker base that aims to complete microtasks on
crowdsourcing platforms in exchange for financial gains,
there is a need for stringent mechanisms to prevent exploitation of deployed tasks. Quality control mechanisms need to accommodate a diverse pool of workers, exhibiting a wide range of behavior. A pivotal step towards fraud-proof task design is understanding the behavioral patterns of microtask workers. In this paper, we analyze the prevalent malicious activity on crowdsourcing platforms and study the behavior exhibited by trustworthy and untrustworthy workers, particularly on crowdsourced surveys. We define and identify different types of workers in the crowd, propose a method to measure malicious activity, and finally present guidelines for the efficient design of crowdsourced surveys.

Microtask crowdsourcing marketplaces encompass a novel
learning environment where crowd workers can be thought
of as learners, who attempt to learn through their experiences in order to become effective and reap bigger monetary rewards. Prior work has not considered the impact of task clarity, which is a function of the task description and instructions, on worker performance and learning. We hypothesize that unclear tasks tend to have a negative impact on the microtask crowdsourcing ecosystem, by sowing seeds of distrust in the minds of crowd workers. Prior work has shown that workers often complete tasks that they are not comfortable with due to a lack of alternatives. Unclear tasks in such contexts can further demotivate crowd workers, and deteriorate the quality of work produced. However, penalizing the reputation of crowd workers despite a lack of clarity in some tasks is unfair. In this paper, we present results from a study of 100 workers on CrowdFlower, regarding their experience of contributing to piecework in the paid microtask crowdsourcing paradigm. Our findings indicate a
definitive presence of unclear tasks in crowdsourcing market-
places, raising the urgent need for mechanisms to improve
task clarity, build trust and foster healthy relationships between requesters and workers.
