ARPA, the precursor to the modern internet, went online in December 1969 connecting four major U.S. universities to provide a communications network for research, education, and government in case of a military attack disrupting normal communication systems. Electronic mail, or email, was introduced by Computer Scientist Ray Tomlinson, and the term "Internet" was first used to describe the early network as it expanded beyond ARPA and the word browser was coined, with the first being created by Tim Berners-Lee and later opened to the public as the World Wide Web.
