THE TECHNOLOGY
AFTER TOMORROW
John & Arvin
What is
technology?
• A machine that facilitates human work
• Ramey (2013) describes it as a tool that process actions
and “extending our abilities”.
• Each tool has a specific work or purpose
– An automobile is use for transportation and an electric
drill is for construction
• Tools needs something to run
o Electricity
o Oil
o Other system that is connected (such as a phone having a
service)
History… • Weapons were the ones that created first
– Mostly for cutting materials and food
– Later, used it as weapons of war-kill
• Egyptians built pyramids
• Bricks were introduced for shelter during the Neolithic period
• Used during the medieval times (History, n.d.)
• Benjamin Franklin successfully proven his theory about
electric conductivity (History, n.d.)
• Electric volts were introduced during the 1800’s to the public
– Industrial development starts
How we
view/use
technology
• Reliable, dependable, accurate
• “Technology is everywhere”
• It changes/updates overtime
• Changes our lives
– Education
– Communication
– Employment/work
– Travel
– Research
Pros • Long distance communication (Facebook, skype)
• Cloud storage (One drive, google drive)
• Entertainment/stress free (Xbox One, Ps4)
• Make connection (Activities online, community)
• Research/resources (News, where to get help)
• Increase productivity of products (“Machines making
machines”-C3Po)
• Makes people safe (Surveillance cameras, automatic
doors)
• Record events (Video camera, camera)
• Fast travel (Airlines,Coach bus)
• Aid (Crutches, wheelchair)
Cons • Poor ergonomics (sitting prolong periods of time)
• Addiction (social media, gaming)
• Cyber bully
• Unknown incomings (call, chat)
• No signal (on a valley or certain areas)
• Not all people like technologies (creates a barrier)
• Internal computer damage (aka “Broke down”)
• Computer virus
• Bills for electricity at home (this is true)
Negative
impact
• How does global warming work?
– Short brief: Before obtaining a finished product, we burn
fossil fuel. This non-renewable resource contains carbon,
which binds with diatomic oxygen to form carbon dioxide
(C + O2 = CO2) . CO2 has the capability of trapping heat
(British Survey, n.d.).
• How warfare changed?
– Germany developedTigerTanks, a heavy armor vehicles
than the allies duringWorldWar II.This made the allies to
pull back from the front lines.
– Atom-bomb dropped on both Nagasaki and Hiroshima
devastating the lands of Japan.
– Today, we worry about nuclear attacks. North Korea
today focus on testing their missiles and the U.N. is
watching their move.
How
directors/aut
hors predict
our world
with
warfare…
• Avatar (2009)
– The movie portrays that militarism would always take
action for domination and remove threats.
– Removes ethic decisions within humanity.
• Terminator: Genisys (2015)
– This shows humanity will soon have a breaking point
towards technology.
– Technology would have a mind itself. Either an ally or
against humankind.
What can
we do about
it?
• You think “we cannot do anything about it because of
the odds are against”.
• How did Koni 2012 attract people’s attention?
– Social media (Youtube, link below)
• We could convince the government what is right by
speaking publicly or establishing communities.
– Think about global humanity not just for self-interest.
– Think about Skynet in theTerminator movies.
– We control technology, not technology controls us-social
constructivism.
What would
happen in
the future?
• Technology still continue to develop and upgrade.
• Technology is inevitable (and there is nothing wrong with
people who despise electronics)
• Military can still develop newer warfare, as long as we control
how to use it.
• If humans are in control
– There are ups and downs depending how we use it.
– More ethical decisions are made.
• If we let technology in control…
– It would have conscious in mind based from analytics of
human behaviour and calculations.
– It would ask what it means to be human
– Again, think aboutTerminator or other Sci-Fi movies.
Technology
VS
The World
• In todays society, there are many problems
• Communication, wars, transportation, efficient energy,
etc.
• People all around the world are trying to solve these
problems
• Although some solutions have been solved, and are
being used others use these inventions for the wrong
intentions
Technology and
Communication
• Throughout the many years, communication has been
quite evolutionary
• From simple one to one phones it has multiplied into
connecting the whole world together
• But this also means the sacrifice of other things
• According to an article, social media, a strong
dominating portion of communicating through
technology has been destroying our communication
with one another (Cicurel, 2014)
• To further understand her points expand on the idea of
how we lose face to face interaction, we lose the
sincerity of our words, and we lose our motivation to
have recreational activates with family, friends, and
relatives.
Technology
and
Violence
• Technology has also advanced in modern warfare
• Not only does it contain basic firearms, but people can now start to
attack your personal information
• Weapons and Warfare -> because technology is so advancing, it
causes people to enter a arms race making more and more advances.
• These become so advance that weapons are being made to attack
others without even having to be present in a armed vehicle (Martin,
2008)
• Personal information -> because our society has
become more reliant on computes most of our
information has been placed on a computer
• This allows hackers to target certain people stealing,
money, gaining power, and even shutting down huge
corporations.
Technology
and
Espionage
• Recently there has been a wonderful creation of a new
working robotic called the Drone
• It allows people to take photos at new angles, and can
be used recreationally
• Sadly, not all people use this item for just those
• Recently there has been reports of people using these
items to spy on people, gathering information, and
potentially setting plans to harm that person
• Although it is being regulated, it has started to become
quite a hazard, and if this item were to be equipped
with a weapon it may heavily influence the safety of
very important people (governments, religious leaders,
scientists, etc.)
Technology
and
The World
• The world is continuing to advance
• As humans, we are continuously adapting to the world
around us
• What happens in the future comes down to how we
decide to use the inventions we create
• Whether it be negative, or positive someone will either
find a way to use it or abuse it
Bombing of Hiroshima
To conclude, • In the world, we can control what we do, but at the
same time we can’t control what others do
• Reiterating that we can choose who we want to be, and
choose what we want to do
• There are both pros, and cons, but in the future what
we do to balance them will have to be how we decide
to regulate them
• Technology is in our hands
