The Soloist is based on the true story of Nathaniel Ayers, a musical prodigy who develops mental illness and becomes homeless in LA. Steve Lopez, an LA Times columnist, meets Nathaniel playing violin in the streets and decides to write an article about him. As Steve gets to know Nathaniel, he gains a new perspective on life. The film had a $60 million budget but grossed $31 million worldwide. It was filmed in LA and Ohio, using homeless people as extras. The marketing was seen as misleading by focusing on the rags to riches story rather than Nathaniel's struggles with mental illness.
