6. After a few moments,
realizing that she did not have a
captive audience,
she began eating her cereal
7. My older son (he’s 15) spoke to me
and said:
“Popi, that’s not fair. You would have
yelled at me and put me in the corner if
I did that at her age”
8. I raised my head from my magazine and
took a sip of my coffee
(buying time of course, all the while thinking,
yup…. He’s right , I was younger and a bit of
a hot head in those days) It’s like when
Stefan first started playing hockey… ah Ha…
I got it!
9. Stefan, do you remember when you
started out as a mite? Remember
how all of you followed the puck
like a school of fish?
10. Yes,,, Stefan answered
What do you do NOW when the
puck is on the other side of the ice
across from you? I inquired
13. I smiled, took a sip from my coffee
and went back to my magazine
thinking… (yeah, baybee, I nailed it
)
14. Using this in life:
A client called me up at the settlement table (I’m a loan
officer) to tell me that he was bothered about the way his
refinance was structured.
He’s a good guy and we had to overcome a few difficult
obstacles just to make it to the settlement table, his
interest rate was about a ½ % better than the current
market. The market had changed to a much higher rate and
the transaction was structured to benefit him in the best
way possible.
15. In my earlier days my reaction would have affected my drive
home and my interactions at home with my family. My
internal dialogue would have sounded much like my young
daughters’ Sunday morning tirade.
I just listened to myself moan and groan about it and waited
until it subsided.
By the time I got him I had shook it off
“Let’s see how this plays out tomorrow”
and called him the next day with possible alternatives.
16. He was ecstatic to hear from me and apologized for yesterday’s call.
His friend recently refinanced and had the transaction
structured in the exact same way. He’s happy with the
transaction and will call me next year for his new purchase.
Wow ,how glad I was that it didn’t affect my drive home or my
night with my family.
Although it doesn’t always turn out for a win, “Let’s see how it plays
out” certainly protects my sanity and those around me from life’s
quirky plays
17. Basically next time you have a “Whoa is me thought…. Just sit
there quietly and listen to your inner dialogue/crying….
18. After a few moments ask yourself…. Are you done? You
may have to do this 3 or more times but before you
know it you’ll find yourself sitting in silence……
