1. THE SCIENCE OF FACIAL BEAUTY

hat makes a face beautiful at any age? What distinguishes the male from
the female face and what are the features that make them both attractive?
Double Board Certified Facial Plastic and Head & Neck Surgeon,
Dr. Vartan Mardirossian explains. With an extensive background in
facial and reconstructive surgery and neuropsychology research, his skill level and expertise
present the verdict of what very few plastic surgeons specialize in: facial feminization.
“Feminine equals beautiful, which equals attractive. Facial feminization is all about
studying ways to enhance the attractiveness of the face, male or female. It takes the brain
only a thousandth of a second to decide the gender, age and attractiveness of a person
based on their facial features,” says Mardirossian. “During that period the eyes perform a
myriad of involuntary tracking movements scanning the entire face and neck, submitting
the information to the subcortical centers of the brain.

There are subtle facial features that unlock the
mechanisms that make us more attracted to a person. It
is the deliberate study of those fine relationships between
aesthetics and neuropsychology that have brought the
field of facial plastic surgery to a new level. It is a new
philosophy of combining facial analysis and aesthetic
surgery.”
Dr. Mardirossian explains the science behind gender
differences and the appearance of an attractive face.
“Male and female features are quite different. While a
woman’s face presents with a smooth forehead, higher
cheekbones and smooth oval shaped jawline, just like
the shape of an inverted cone, men generally have a
protruding forehead, lower eyebrows, larger nose and a
more prominent jawline, more like a rectangle.
The center of the female face is the eyes. There
are a constellation of procedures that are designated
to underline their shape, color and innate beauty. The
blepharoplasty or eyelid lift eliminates the so-called tired
look. Lifting the eyebrows in an esthetically pleasant
position, eliminating the crows` feet and adding more
volume to the cheekbones directs more light into the eyes
to naturally enhance their beauty.
To underline the oval shape and the attractiveness of
the jaw line, a classic face lift and neck lift can eliminate
the relaxed cheek tissue on the sides of the chin along
with tightening the skin and muscle of the neck.
A further step is to soften the contour of the
forehead, jawline and chin if they are too prominent.
Bone contouring, a safe and proven procedure, is what
more women are looking into. This is one of the defining
marks that make faces more feminine.”
A woman’s upper lip becomes longer as the years pass.
While others focus on injecting the lip with fillers, Dr.
Mardirossian focuses on the root of the problem. The lip
lift procedure lifts the upper lip to show the upper teeth.
This shows the natural fullness of the upper lip without
the use of fillers. During a face or neck lift procedure,
some of the soft tissue can be reimplanted in the lips or
the smile lines filling them in naturally, without the use
of cosmetic fillers.
“The lip lift procedure is one of the most requested
procedures I perform. It takes only an hour and can
be done under local anesthesia in our office.”says
Mardirossian.

Although, the top procedure for men is still
rhinoplasty, men’s facial structures still lean to the need
for facial contouring. The neck lift, for men, can give the
jaw a more defined structure or a more chiseled sideline.
“Along with the golden ratios of facial aesthetics,
each person has unique subtleties. Giving balance to the
face is a delicate equation,” says Mardirossian.
