Success, Sanctification & The
Soul
Success and Sanctification
Success and Sanctification overlap by about 85%,
a CEO and a mature Christian BOTH require:
• A strong will, discipline, “be strong and courageous”…
• A clear goal and vision
• Reading, knowledge and wisdom
• Good attitudes and controlling one’s attention, thoughts and mind
• Honesty, integrity, clear ethics and self-awareness
• Love, generosity, an attitude of gratitude
Successful and Sanctified
• Daniel
• Joseph
• Moses
• Abraham
• Joshua
• Nehemiah
• Boaz
• King Hezekiah
• Most of the apostles were successful in some kind of business
Your Life Is The Size Of Your Courage!
• Joshua 1:7-9 ESV Only be strong and very
courageous, being careful to do according
to all the law that Moses my servant
commanded you. Do not turn from it to the
right hand or to the left, that you may have
good success wherever you go. For then
you will make your way prosperous, and
then you will have good success. (9) Have
I not commanded you? Be strong and
courageous. ….
Two Kinds of Souls
• Eternal Soul – forever young in spirit, growing, ageless, joyful, loving,
wise, holy, kind and pure they identify with the timeless Kingdom of God.
• Perishing Soul – growing in carnal pursuits, sensual, sinful, lustful,
become bitter and resentful, squabbling, vengeful, become bitter as they
age. Always talking about the good old days. Raging at life, they identify
with the body, the world and the god of this age.
• John 3:16 ESV "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son,
that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Sanctification = Purity of the Soul
God seeks the purity of our soul:
Love – purified from hatred
Holiness – purified from worldliness
Wisdom – purified from folly
Righteousness – purified from all wickedness
The Perfection of the Soul
Matthew 5:43-48 ESV "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love
your neighbor and hate your enemy.' (44) But I say to you, Love your
enemies and pray for those who persecute you, (45) so that you
may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For He makes his sun
rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the
unjust. (46) For if you love those who love you, what reward do you
have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? (47) And if you greet
only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even
the Gentiles do the same? (48) You therefore must be perfect, as
your heavenly Father is perfect.
In The Image of His Son
Romans 8:28-30 ESV And we know that for those who love
God all things work together for good, for those who are called
according to his purpose. (29) For those whom he foreknew
he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his
Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many
brothers. (30) And those whom he predestined he also
called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those
whom he justified he also glorified.
Blameless
Ephesians 1:3-4 ESV Blessed be the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed
us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the
heavenly places, (4) even as he chose us in Him
before the foundation of the world, that we
should be holy and blameless before him.
You Need To Be Sanctified
Hebrews 12:14 ESV Strive for peace
with everyone, and for the holiness
without which no one will see the
Lord.
Good Works of Christian Service
• We are made to do good works (Eph 2:8-10)
• It is not just “read your Bible, pray and go to Church”
• We also need to give practical help (James 1:27)
• These good works help perfect our soul.
• We become less selfish when we do them
• Faith works through love (Galatians 5:6)
Seven Ways We Are Purified
1) Obedience to the Word / Truth (1 Peter 1:22-25)
2) Godly Hope (1 John 3:1-3)
3) Looking to Jesus (Hebrews 12:1-2)
4) Putting On the New Nature (Ephesians 4:20-24)
5) Systematically Adding Virtue to Virtue (2 Peter 1:3-8)
6) Steadfast Patience and Endurance (Hebrews 6:11,12)
7) Suffering (Romans 5:3-5, Hebrews 2:10)
Why Suffering?
• When we are sinned against we learn FORGIVENESS
• When we have sadness and grief we learn INDESTRUCTIBLE JOY
• When we have to correct evil we learn the administration of JUSTICE
• When we face danger and stress we learn COURAGE
• When we see weakness and sickness we learn COMPASSION
• When we face temptation we learn SELF-CONTROL
God’s Good Discipline
• Hebrews 12:6-11 ESV For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and
chastises every son whom he receives." (7) It is for discipline that you
have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom
his father does not discipline? (8) If you are left without discipline, in
which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.
(9) Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we
respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of
spirits and live? (10) For they disciplined us for a short time as it
seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, that we may
share his holiness. (11) For the moment all discipline seems painful
rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness
to those who have been trained by it.
Action
1) Work on one aspect of purifying your soul –
make a start – even just praying about it.
2) Find a prayer partner who agrees that holiness
is vital and who will be your backstop along the
way.
3) Tackle a humanitarian project of some sort that
will stretch your soul e.g. help at a soup kitchen
