1. The perfect washing area - Unique design, high functionality
“We need designs that aren’t constantly shouting out, ‘hello, over here!’” – this is the theory of Christian Werner, one
of Germany’s best interior designers who has already designed three successful bathroom series for Duravit.
Werner believes it’s high time to “re-imagine furniture in the bathroom.” This makes a lot of sense at the washing area,
the heart of any bathroom for two reasons: not only does it put its stamp on the character and style of the entire room,
but everything needs to work perfectly here.
As well as looking neat and providing enough storage space, a sense of wellbeing and individual taste are key factors
when deciding on design, materials, colors and fittings.
Standalone features such as the Philippe Starck-designed Cape Cod above-counter basin or the DuraStyle washbasin
with wooden frame designed by Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez set striking accents. Cape Cod (figure 1: CapeCod
white) impresses with its unique design and authentic materials, solid real wood and thin-walled wash bowls in three
different shapes.
The rounded edges and rims (figure 2: DuraStyle) are characteristic of DuraStyle. Open shelving creates an airy overall
look.
Furniture washbasins with matching vanity units form a single, harmonious unit and provide practical storage space.
Happy D.2 (figures 3 and 4: Happy D.) has five widths to choose from. Within, the Duravit organizer system made from
maple or walnut keeps things neat and tidy.
The first thing you notice about the P3 Comforts are the generously-proportioned storage areas of the 105 cm-wide
asymmetric furniture washbasin. (Figures 5 and 6: P3 Comforts, asymmetric)
Duravit has developed completely new and minimalistic washbasin solutions with "c-bonded". With this new
technology, the furniture washbasin is bonded almost seamlessly with the vanity unit in a painstaking process (figures 7
and 8: c-bonded).
Console solutions are unique and versatile, offering a range of combination options. They appear elegant and
lightweight and can be customized with vanity units for extra storage. The X-Large or L-Cube (design by Christian
Werner) series produce nuanced, harmonious washing areas with plenty of comfort. (Figure 9: L-cube)
Built-in washbasins are ground flat in an extra work step. Set into a countertop or vanity unit from above, the edge of
the washbasin lies completely flat on the surface – leaving plenty of usable space. Alternatively, some washbasins are
fitted into the countertop from below. Other versions include semi-recessed washbasins and console basins are
available in many different forms and variants. These are also ground flat in an extra work step. Popular classics are the
rectangular Vero console basins combined with consoles and furniture from the X-Large range (figures 10 and 11:
X-Large). With variable widths of 80 to 200 cm, the consoles make optimum use of the available space and are also
suitable as niche solutions.
2. Light and mirrors
Zonal light sources are best placed directly by the mirror with easy-to-operate lighting elements, such as the
sensor-operated L-Cube mirrors and mirror cabinets with a light frame (figure 12: ME with mirror cabinet, figure 13: P3
with mirror cabinet). Ambient lighting such as Vero can be positioned above or below the washing area. Mood lighting
should also be planned in the bathroom as a third light source that simultaneously emits light and is an object to
behold. For example, the mirror from the Cape Cod series by Philippe Starck (figure 14: CapeCod Oak): the wide,
all-round LED light frames the mirror, sets accents in the bathroom and can be dimmed via an infrared sensor. A mirror
doubles the effect of bright lighting – the area surrounding the mirror is therefore ideal for dimmable zonal light
sources and ambient light.
3. Accessories
Accessories – such as soap dispensers, towel rails and the cosmetic mirror – offer practical solutions for the bathroom
and complement the washbasin and other features. The timelessly modern D-code range or the straight-lined design of
the Karree accessories in chrome and satin-finish glass are so flexible that they harmonize with practically all the
Duravit bathroom series whilst also lending the room a unique look.
Colors and materials
Almost limitless design scope: at Duravit the basic color palette includes around 50 different shades. The décor finishes
range from white through different wood tones and Graphite Matt through to the unusual Linen décor finish. Selected
real-wood veneers made from Walnut, Oak or Chestnut remain a key trend.
High-gloss finishes in Apricot Pearl, Jade and Dolomiti Gray or satin-matt lacquers in the Scandinavian shades of Nordic
White, Stone gray and Light blue add color to the bathroom. (Figures 15 and 16: L-cube)
