THE
PERFECT
GUY
DIRECTED BY DAVID
ROSENTHAL
PLOT SUMMARY
Leah Vaughn is unhappy in her relationship with her boyfriend, David King, as he does
not feel ready to commit to her wishes of starting a family, resulting in their breakup.
Soon after, she meets Carter Duncan, and they quickly grow close, managing his way
into the hearts of her friends and family.
Later, a serious event takes place when a stranger approaches Leah Vaughn with an
enquiry but Carter Duncan thinks he is flirting with her and viciously attacks. After being
mortified, Leah Vaughn breaks up with Carter Duncan.
Over the next several weeks, Carter Duncan becomes increasingly possessive and
obsessive with Leah Vaughn and begins to stalk her. It gets to the extent that Leah
Vaughn feels the urge to get the police involved for her own protection. Soon time later,
David King (her ex boyfriend) contacts Leah Vaughn about rekindling their relationship
to which Leah eagerly agrees.
However, Carter Duncan continues to stalk Leah Vaughn and it becomes life
threatening. It leads to him intruding her house on many occasions and setting up
hidden cameras. The story is consistent until there is a solution at the end but along the
way there are numerous mishaps and upsets.
MISE-EN-SCENE:
SETTING/LOCATION
From my understanding, I believe The
Perfect Guy is set in Los Angeles,
America. In the trailer we see some
stunning establishing shots of the city
horizon. Because it is just a trailer the
clips are short and sweet, without
giving too much away and spoiling the
film.
However, we see scenes in a
restaurant, which has connotations
with a romantic and date scenario. We
also see locations such as, a nightclub,
detectives office and a big scene at a
petrol station that twists the plot.
MISE-EN-SCENE:
ICONOGRAPHY & PROPS
Similar thing applies here as well; we as an audience aren’t given too much detail so trying to
identify iconography is difficult. However, within the first couple of clips at the commencement
of the trailer, we see a stunning view of LA from the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood
and within the shot we see the iconic Griffith Observatory.
Furthermore, where props are concerned we see many wine glasses at the start of the trailer
announcing a celebration of something good taking place, which is the new relationship
between Leah Vaughn and Carter Duncan. We also see Carter Duncan hand Leah Vaughn’s
parents a batch of flowers and a pair of New York Giants American Football tickets to indicate
the supposed ‘perfect guy’ he is. But, as the trailer progression we see rubber gloves, knife
and gun that inevitably has very little positive connotations. There is a clip of a rose and note
mysteriously placed on Leah Vaughn’s; the note says “If I can’t have you no one will”.
