The Oscars, officially known as the Academy Awards, are annual awards given for excellence in cinematic achievements. The awards began in 1929 with a ceremony at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel where 15 statuettes were awarded. Over the years, more categories have been added and it has grown to become one of the most prominent award ceremonies televised live in over 100 countries annually. The most recent ceremony, the 85th Academy Awards, was held on February 24, 2013 in Los Angeles.
