The document discusses the use of anthropomorphic animals in graphic novels and comics. It explores how Robert Crumb popularized subverting the wholesome reputation of funny animals with Fritz the Cat in the 1960s. Crumb influenced artists like Jim Woodring and Kim Deitch. Meanwhile, Art Spiegelman used animal characters in Maus to make the Holocaust more accessible, but he did not directly influence funny animal cartoonists as much as Crumb. Different artists were inspired by different predecessors, showing that anthropomorphic animals can be used to explore personal themes in many ways.

The U.S. Navy honored Japanese-American teachers who taught Japanese language during World War 2. A ceremony was held at Pomona College to present public service awards to the teachers, known as sensei, 60 years after they taught at a Navy language school in Boulder, Colorado. Their teaching over 1,000 students proved invaluable to the U.S. intelligence and war efforts in the Pacific, as graduates went on to interrogate prisoners and translate documents. The teachers helped change students' views of the Japanese from enemies to fellow human beings, and influenced many to admire Japanese history and culture. The honor came as former students and officials realized the U.S. had never formerly thanked the former teachers.
Rare footage of Johnny Carson's early Tonight Show episodes from the 1960s was discovered in the archives of the American Forces Network Broadcast Center in Riverside, California. The 8mm film reel, which should have been destroyed decades ago, contains portions of shows from before 1972 when very little footage was preserved. Johnny Carson's nephew and president of Carson Entertainment Group, Jeff Sotzing, was excited to receive the film as it depicts a period of the show they previously had no footage from and shows Carson and guests smoking and drinking on set. The film will be converted to a digital format and made available through Carson Entertainment Group.

This document discusses the failure of U.S. Naval Intelligence to anticipate the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Despite collecting intelligence on Japan for 40 years and conducting counterintelligence operations against Japanese officials, ONI was surprised by the attack. The document examines ONI's intelligence gathering efforts on Japan over time, including establishing a Japanese language program in the 1920s and the Army's early success in decrypting Japanese communications before World War 2, but how these efforts did little to prepare ONI for the Pearl Harbor attack.
