The Olympic Games began in ancient Greece around 1400 BC and were held every four years in Olympia to honor the Greek god Zeus. The Games were banned in 393 AD by Roman emperor Theodosius I due to their pagan roots. Modern Olympics began in 1896 in Athens and have since grown into a global event held every two years in different host cities, alternating between Summer and Winter Games.
