The Great Gatsby
It ismy great pleasure towelcome you to
SilcoatesSchool’sseniorproductionof ‘The
Great Gatsby’.All the praise mustgo to the
wonderful andhighlytalentedcast. Whatyou
will watchtonightcouldnothave happened
withouttheircommitment,flexibility,and
determinationtoputon the bestshow
possible. Eachmemberhasbeena pleasure
to workwith. A special mentionmustalsogo
to Dr Johnsonand hisA-Level Englishclass,for
theirhelpalongthe way.
On stage tonightyouwill see some ‘oldfaces’,
people whohave been partof previousSenior
School playsandTheatre Studies. Youwill
alsowitnessthe debutof some notso familiar
stage faces,but whoare nolesstalented.Iam
pleasedtointroduce RoryEllis;hisfirst
appearance ona stage,andwhat betterway
to start than playingthe title character,
Gatsby himself.No pressure there then.
The story itself takesplace inournarrator’s
head,OldNickCarraway,playedbythe
returningOli Race.OldNickislookingbackon
the eventsof hisyoungerself,whenhe spent
a summer‘outEast’. The eventsportrayedon
the stage had a profoundandlastingeffecton
OldNick. Indeed,the storyisOldNick’s
catharsis.
As the narrative progressesYoungNick,
playedbyJoe Reid,becomesmore andmore
detachedfromthe highglamourworld
inhabitedbythe Buchanans,Georgie Harrison
and BradleyKittrick,andMs JordanBaker,
LydiaDuval. The climax of the playleaves a
trail of destructionthateachcharacter must
struggle todeal withintheirownparticular
fashion.
Alongthe waywe meetgangsters,1920
hipstersoutto enjoythe seeminglynever
endingparty,andordinarypeople caughtup
inthe gamesplayedbythe richand bored.
The adaptationisa mixture of modernand
1920s style,takinginspirationfromthe hybrid
of clothesandmusic.All thatisleftisto sit
back and enjoythe show.
Thenwearthe goldhat,if thatwill move her;
If you can bounce high, bounce forhertoo,
Till she cry ‘Lover,gold-hatted,high-bouncing
lover,
I musthave you!’
