The Evolution of Leadership
Theories
This presentation will explore the development of leadership theories
and how they've shaped our understanding of effective leadership in
organizations.
Early Theories: Searching for the Ideal Leader
Trait Theories
Early attempts to define leadership traits based on
personal characteristics like intelligence, charisma, and
determination were unsuccessful. This led to later research
that identified seven specific traits associated with effective
leadership.
Behavioral Studies
Researchers focused on the behavior of leaders, exploring
different leadership styles and their impact on group
dynamics and performance. Three major studies – the
University of Iowa, Ohio State, and University of Michigan –
offered valuable insights into leader behavior.
Moving Beyond Behavior: Situational Leadership
1
Contingency Theories
These theories emphasize that the best leadership style depends on the situation, such
as the leader's personality, the group's characteristics, and the task at hand.
2
Path-Goal Theory
The leader's primary role is to clarify the path for followers to achieve their
goals. This is accomplished by providing support, direction, and rewards.
3
Transformational Leadership
These leaders inspire and motivate followers to achieve
extraordinary goals by appealing to their values, beliefs, and
aspirations.
