The Enigma
• What enigma is used to ensure that the audience is left with
a puzzle to solve or unanswered questions which can only be
answered by going to watch the film?
• The questions which can only be answered in the film is why
Freddy Krugger was so hated and why he is also targeting a
specific group of teenagers and who dies and how they die by
falling asleep, these make people want to watch the film as
the trailer doesn’t give away this information.
• What parts of the narrative/plot are left
unanswered? What missing elements do you
have to guess?
• You have to guess why freddy krugger is
killing everyone and how it is even possible.
Editing and Camera Shots
• How is editing used to achieve action, drama
and suspense? What type of edits/transitions
are used?
• Quick editing from scene to scene at the end of the trailer
builds up a lot of tension and suspense because you’re really
focused on what’s happening which builds up for the jump
scare at the end which is unexpected. This makes the
antagonist stay in their mind as it is the last thing that they
see.
• What camera angles and movements are
used and why?
• An establishing shot is used as soon as the trailer starts to
show the main scene of the film and where most of the film is
set place Most of the other shots are close up and very slow
movement to show the antagonists face and the expressions
on the victims face. Then finally the last shots are also close
up and have very quick editing to build up a scary atmosphere
• How are the key characters highlighted?
• The key characters get the most camera time and the
camera shot is usually very close up and they are also
usually the ones who talk during the trailer.
• How is the action interspersed (mixed in
with) the credits on screen?
• The action is only mixed in with the name of
the film.
• How is light used? When does the trailer use
high key and low key lightening?
• Throughout the whole trailer it is very dark and
mysterious, Freddy Krugger is frequently shown as a shadowy
figure to make him more mysterious and scary. Throughout
the whole trailer there is not much lighting everything is dark
and dismal because this is the stereotypical way to show a
horror film as everything bad happens in the darkeness.
• What colours are used? Are they symbolic or
representative of the
narrative, themes, genre?
• The main colours which are used are red and black and
stereotypically these are dark depressing colours and red
represents death and blood, however freddy kruggers jumper
is also red and black which is symbolic to his character and the
horror genre.
