The battle of the North
• The Franquist troops
  decided to attack the
  North of Spain from April
  to October 1937
• Guernica was bombed
  and Bilbao surrendered
  in June
• Despite other offensive
  attacks, the Republicans
  couldn´t avoid the loss of
  Santander and Asturias
The battle of the river Ebro
• The Franquist rebels
  marched on Aragon and
  soon Catalonia was left
  alone.
• The Republicans did
  their best near the River
  Ebro.
• But finally Rebels beat
  and Barcelona was
  defeated in 1939
The End of the war
• On February 1939 , only
  Madrid and the center of
  Spain remained Republican
• The government of Negrin
  tried to resist , but a coup d
  ´état in Madrid led to a
  committee which failed to
  negotiate with General
  Franco.
• After the Republican defeat
  , over half million Spaniars
  crossed the French border
The End
• When the WWII broke
  out , thousends of these
  exiled Republicans fought
  against Nazi Germany
• Many were killed in the
  concentration camps
• Others chose America or
  even URSS
• The Republican
  government itself formed
  an exiled government in
  Mexico
