"The Earth on Turtle's Back"
From the Onondaga-Northeast Woodlands tribe, Retold by Michael J. Caduto & Joseph Bruchac
Before Earth was here there was only water as far as one could see in all directions, with birds and animals swimming around in it. Up above in the clouds there was Skyland. In Skyland was a great and beautiful tree with four white roots stretching to the four sacred directions. Every kind of fruit and flower grew from its wide spreading branches.
The Chief of Skyland's young wife was expecting a child. One night she dreamt she saw the great tree uprooted. The next morning she told her husband her dream. "This is very sad," he said, "for it is a dream of great power and we must do all we can to make it come true." Then the chief called all the men together and told them they must uproot the tree. But the roots were so deep and strong they couldn't budge it. So the ancient chief himself wrapped his arms around the tree and strained and strained, until with one last great effort he uprooted it. Now there was a great hole where the tree's roots had been. The chief's wife came and leaned over to look down, holding the tip of one of the uprooted tree's branches to steady herself. Far below she thought she saw something glittering like water. Leaning out further, she lost her balance and fell into the hole. Her hand slipped from the tip of the branch, leaving her only a handful of seeds as she fell.
Far, far below in the waters some of the animals looked up. "Someone is falling from the sky," said one.
"We must help her," said another. Then two Swans flew up and caught her between their wings, and brought her gently down to the water where the birds and animals were watching.
She is not like us," said one of the animals. "She doesn't have webbed feet. I don't think she can live in the water."
"What shall we do?" said another of the water animals.
"I know," said one of the birds. "I have heard there is Earth far below the waters. If we dive down and bring up Earth she will have a place to stand. So the birds and animals tried to bring up Earth. First Duck dove far down beneath the surface, but he couldn't reach the bottom and floated back up. Then Beaver tried. He went even deeper, so deep that it was all dark, but he couldn't reach the bottom either. Then Loon tried and was gone a long, long time, but he too failed to bring up Earth. Soon it seemed that all had tried and failed. Then a small voice spoke.
"I will bring up Earth or die trying." They all looked to see who it was. It was little Muskrat. She dove down and swam and swam. She was not as strong and swift as the others, but she was determined. She went so deep that it was all dark, and still she swam deeper. Her lungs felt ready to burst, but she swam deeper still. At last, just as she was becoming unconscious, she grasped at the bottom with her little paw and floated upwards, almost dead. When the other animals saw her break the surface, they thought she had failed. Then .

In the summer of 1980, a maverick young doctor gave it all up, to hitchhike around the world.
The first arc he carved with his thumb stopped a little red pickup that took him over the horizon. Like his mythical hunter companion, Orion, he was on a vision quest, propelled toward the dawn to have his sight restored.
This is the story of that five-year odyssey to discover his Destiny.

2. Expostion Before the earth was created and there were living things there was nothing. The world was but a dreary hole. After many years a young maiden fell out of the caliginous ball of shadows. She went by the name of Vitalachrya. She closed her eyes and cried tears of loneliness. She had no one and nothing.
3. Rising Action She finally realized after a long time that nothing would become of her tears. Vitalachrya opened her eyes. She saw life, essences, and felt air to breathe. She had gained a soul. Vitalachrya felt reborn. With her tears thing were able to grow. She was renewed and happy, and as the last tear rolled down her soft-spoken face something magnificent arose before her. She thought it was the most beautiful thing she has ever seen. Alas, it was a tender rose. Vitalachrya would go see the rose everyday. She watered it with the oceans and lakes and rivers she had created with her tears. She nurtured it as a mother would her child. The rose was the only thing that made her happy. One day, Vitalachrya came to see the rose. The rose was withering. She tried her hardest to keep her rose alive.
4. Rising Action Eventually, the rose ceased to live. Right as Vitalachrya was going to cry something arose from the wilted rose. It was a man a god to be exact. The moment Vitalachrya saw him she fell in love. His name was Pacsophus. Vitalachrya showed him the beauty of the world. Pacsophus and Vitalachrya married in a meadow bursting with life. They had four children. The first was a son named Hummundus. He was the god of earth. The second was another son named Myomar. He was the god of the sea. Lastly, Vitalachrya and Pacsophus had two twin girls. Their names were Stella and Helia. Stella is the goddess of the night and stars. Helia is the goddess of the sun and day.
5. Climax Everything was peaceful until Myomar and Hummundus were old enough to rule. Myomar believed he should be the ruler. “I am the most intelligent; therefore I should be ruler of the gods and goddesses.” However, Hummundus felt he should rule. “I am the strongest; hense I should rule the gods and goddesses.”
6. Climax Vitalachrya arranged a contest based on intelligence and strength to see who would be eligible to rule. She said “For the strength portion you will both have to climb to the top of the 3000 foot Vitality Tree. For the intelligence portion you must go to the desert, woods, artic, and sea. You will visit each one for a week. You must learn how to survive on your own with harsh conditions.” Myomar and Hummundus were up for the ghastly challenge and off they went.
7. Falling Action (After the competition,) The brothers returned to the castle in the meadow where Pacsophus and Vitalachrya determined the winner. (Hummundus and Myomar didn‘t know who gained points every round.) Since they had been monitoring they knew the points. Myomar had three points and Hummundus has two points. Vitalachrya declared, “Myomar is the new king of the gods!” However, Myomar had is own thing to say, “I know I am the new king of the gods; however, I could really use Hummundus‘s help. He wouldn‘t have lost the strength competition if it wasn‘t for bad luck. So, I would like Hummundus to help me rule.”
8. Resolution Everyone was very surprised by this gesture and allowed Myomar to get Hummundus’s help ruling. Stella and Helia were happy to hear that both of there favorites were ruling. Stella and Helia both told the brother they loved how they had helped and confessed there love. The two couples became married and started a new generation of gods.
