The T. & A. Baťa Shoe Company was founded in 1894 in Zlín, Moravia by Tomáš Baťa and his siblings and grew to employ over 600 workers by 1912 due to the success of their affordable leather and textile shoe called the "Batovky." During World War I and the subsequent economic crisis, Tomáš Baťa cut shoe prices in half and established welfare programs for employees to help the company continue growing internationally. By the 1930s, Bata had over 65,000 employees worldwide and factories across Europe and in countries like Canada, India, and the United States.
