O leitor deve ter ouvido mencionarem, em algum lugar ou situação, a expressão sétima arte, a qual se refere às produções que são exibidas por um equipamento denominado cinematógrafo ou, simplesmente, cinema, caso seja de sua preferência.
É o cinema, portanto, a arte de reproduzir, seqüencialmente e com alta velocidade, fotogramas, de maneira que representem clara e inequivocamente, um movimento. Para tal finalidade é imprescindível não deixar de apresentar um número de, pelo menos, 16 fotogramas por segundo, pois, caso esta quantidade não seja observada e levada em consideração, a região do sistema nervoso central que percebe imagem e movimento, o cérebro, será capaz de tornar notório que não há, em verdade, um movimento em andamento, mas, sim, apenas uma seqüência de fotografias em apresentação.
Foi a invenção do cinema influenciada fundamentalmente por inovações tecnológicas. Não fosse a invenção da fotografia o uso de jogos óticos, como o zoopraxioscópio, não teria sido possível aos Irmãos Lumière, inventores dos cinematógrafo, realizar a primeira sessão de cinema, em Paris, em 1895.
