workers in New York laid the keel of the USS Monitor, a craft whose launching would usher in the
era of industrial age warfare.
This 987-ton armored turret gunboat saw its first action against the Confederate ironclad Virginia
((which had been built from the captured Union ship Merrimack)) in a historic engagement on
March 9, 19862. The previous day, the Virginia had defeated two big Federal warships, destroying
both and killing more than 240 of their crewmen. The battle was ruled a tactical draw, the Monitor
helped preserve the Federal blockade of the Norfolk area.

For instance, an international team participating in a European Space Agency training program
recently spent six days in a dark cave on the island of Sardinia to simulate real exploration
conditions. Why Sardinia? According to ESA, the island is chockablock with "isolated mountains and
forest areas, rugged and savage."
For six days they lived and worked in the island's complex cave systems - some of them unmapped or
unexplored.
"Even for astronauts, life in the dark, cool, humid underground environment can be a completely
new situation with interesting psychological and logistical problems," according to Loredana
Bessone, an astronaut trainer at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany.
