Waves can be categorized as either transverse or longitudinal based on the direction of particle motion relative to the direction of energy transport. Transverse waves involve particle motion perpendicular to the direction of propagation, such as water waves and electromagnetic waves. Longitudinal waves involve particle motion parallel to the direction of propagation, including sound waves which are compression waves that travel through solids, liquids, and gases.
