It can involve real-time video consultations between providers and patients, or storing and forwarding medical images and data for offline review. While telemedicine has benefits like improving access to specialists in rural areas, it still faces barriers like high infrastructure costs, lack of standards and regulations, and reimbursement issues. As technologies improve and costs decrease, telemedicine has great potential to expand healthcare access.
