Technology &
Modernization
Brianna Hicks
      &
   Tashana
   Gabriel
In Fahrenheit 451 ,
         Ray
   Bradbury shows
     Technology
 & Modernization as
          a
substitute for Human
emotions and family
         and
     Friendship.
HUMAN
EMOTIONS :
"Will you turn the
         parlor
   off?" he asked.
 "That's my family.“
( Bradbury page 23
     lines 12-13)
This Quote is very significant because it
shows Ray Bradbury's fear of how
technology is taking over the need for
          family.
Friendship:
“You're not like the others. I've seen a few; I know.
When I talk, you look at me. When I said
something about the moon, you looked at the
moon, last night. The others would never do
that. The others would walk off and leave me
talking. Or threaten me. No one has time any
more for anyone else. You're one of the few who
put up with me.” ( Bradbury page 10 line 47)
What Does this Mean?
This quote marks the beginning of Montag
and Clarisse Friendship. This quote was so
interesting because they true meaning of
friendship came out. Clarisse was shocked at
how her & Montag connected so well
especially with him being a fireman.
Def : a person or thing of
distinctive character
(Dictionary.com)
“We need not to be let alone. We need to
be really bothered once in a while. How
long is it since you were really
 bothered? About something
 important, about something
real?” (Bradbury page 24 lines 50-53)
Ray Bradbury is saying technology and
modernization is taking over so much, that
no one knows anyone anymore. Mr. Bradbury
is saying we need to be bothered by reality
to see how it is destroying up physically,
mentally and emotionally.
Discussion Questions
1. Faber says that books can be beaten down with reason, but that TV
overwhelms the senses and can not. Is he right? Does TV really deserve so
much credit here?

2. In the digitized, mechanical world of Fahrenheit 451, what makes
something real? What’s more "real" – books or TV? Are either really
substantive?

3. What does Mildred mean when she calls the TV her "family"?
