technology-enhanced micro innovation in European educationFabio Nascimbeni
The VISIR project addresses three gaps in European education: the understanding gap between learning theories and practices, the networking gap between experts across countries, and the mainstreaming gap of existing micro-innovations. VISIR collects 100 micro-innovation practices from Europe to better network innovators and influence policy. Examples of micro-innovations presented include apps to teach programming, using student podcasts as virtual tours, and augmented reality for biology lessons. Emerging observations are that innovators prize interactive approaches over replication, technology enables new pedagogies, and public-private partnerships encourage innovation.
Recommendations for scalability of e-learning innovationFabio Nascimbeni
The VISIR network held a workshop to discuss recommendations for mainstreaming ICT-enhanced and open education based on research and analysis of micro-innovation practices. Attendees at the workshop, which included innovators, experts, practitioners, and decision makers, discussed barriers to scaling innovations, issues around funding for beyond the pilot phase, and how to engage learners and communities. Questions and discussions focused on how to better support innovative teachers, communicate the results and impact of innovations, and create structures for low-bureaucracy funding and recognition of innovations. The VISIR network aims to disseminate the results and recommendations from the workshop to relevant stakeholders.
Priorities for EU-Caribbean cooperation in Science and TechnologyFabio Nascimbeni
This document summarizes the results of the EUCARINET project which mapped research priorities and capacity in the Caribbean region. Through a series of workshops, priority areas were identified in health, environment, renewable energy, ICT, and bioeconomy. Examples of excellent research from various Caribbean countries were also highlighted. However, there are still barriers to EU-Caribbean cooperation in science and technology, including limited public funding, low research capacity, disconnection between research and enterprise, and low priority placed on STI by Caribbean governments. Overcoming these challenges would allow STI to better contribute to solving societal issues.

Why do learners cooperate? hints from network sciences on motivation for coll...Fabio Nascimbeni
This document discusses how insights from network science can help explain learner motivation for collaborative learning. It notes that network thinking is becoming more important in many fields, including education. Adopting a collaborative approach has costs, but humans tend to use strategies like direct and indirect reciprocity to encourage cooperation. Four conditions support collaborative learning: confidence, commitment, allowing for divergence, and decentralization. The role of "collaboration dynamisers" who weave networks is also important. Network analysis methods can help measure new things, reveal motivational patterns, improve support, and increase network thinking in education.
