At the latest member meeting of International Ocean Freight Forwarders and Logistics Association,
Taiwan (IOFFLAT), the country's largest logistics association, director general of the association Tai
Chih-chung said that the total quantity of sea freight and air transport through Taiwan is expected to
reach 22 million tonnes in 2015, with trade value over US$337 billion, reports our Chinese language
sister paper China Times.
Taiwan must update and increase its global competitiveness in the hope of becoming Asia's value-
added logistics center, Tai said.
The amendment of Number 1, Article 20, of the Customs Law through the joint efforts of IOFFLAT
and the Ministry of Finance to is also expected to pass the legislature this year.

Once the freight forwarders are permitted to conduct cargo manifest, transport and transit, they can
attract cargo from Singapore, Hong Kong and mainland China, reassemble the cargo, add value and
export it -- and estimated 600,000 tonnes of shipping per year.
Taiwan has a geographical advantage, Tsai said, as 80% of global logistics can reach Taipei within
four hours. Tai also said the B2C and C2C online shopping platform Taibo had asked for Taiwan to
provide a logistics transit center several times.
2. A number of other senior government officials and business leaders also attended the meeting. Lin
Tsu-chia, deputy director of the Mainland Affairs Council, said that under the cross-strait trade-i-
-services pact (which remains stalled in the legislature), freight forwarders can control both high-
and low-end markets, while Chinese companies can invest in Taiwan through cooperation or stock
purchases, which will help Taiwan enter the mainland market while China in turn will open its
market to Taiwanese companies.
Leader of the Logistics Group of the Industrial Technology Research Center Hsu Tun-nien further
pointed out that the logistics relationship between Taiwan and the rest of the world is B2B and from
Taiwan to domestic customers B2C. An integration of the two separate areas will make offer a
bigger market, Hsu said.
IOFFLAT also announced that it has obtained the authorization to host the International Federation
of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) 2015. This, according to Tai, represents international
afirmation of Taiwan's status in terms of logistics.
The event will be attended by representatives of more than 150 countries and hundreds of freight
towarders with about 1,800 representatives in total.
