Swimming has been an Olympic sport since the first modern Olympics in 1896. It features competitions in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and medley races for both men and women. Some of the top swimmers who have won medals at recent Olympics include Catarina Soares of Portugal, Maarten van der Weijden of the Netherlands, and Larisa Ilchenko who has represented several countries.
