This document is a submission by Abhishek Giri, a student in the Department of Zoology and Applied Aquaculture at Barkatullah University in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. It discusses a study of the physico-chemical parameters and fish diversity of Shahpura Lake in Bhopal. Water samples were collected from four sites over three months and various parameters like temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen were analyzed. Six fish species belonging to two families were found. Tilapia mossambica was the most dominant and abundant species, which can pose a threat to local fish populations.

3.  Water of good quality is required for living organisms. Madhya
Pradesh is rich source of water bodies.
 In “Lake city Bhopal” large number of lakes and reservoirs are
present, which are polluted due to multiple anthropogenic
factors in catchment area of wetlands.
 Shahpura Lake was formed in 1974-1975 under the Betwa river
irrigation project scheme.
 The lake water has been used for irrigation and fish culture.
 Factors responsible for eutrophication of Shahpura Lake are :
untreated sewage inflow, siltation and excessive growth of
aquatic weeds, washing and bathing activities, deforestation, soil
erosion etc.

4.  Shahpura Lake is a manmade water impoundment, which was
formed in 1974-1975 under the Betwa irrigation scheme.
 Among the Bhopal lakes the Shahpura Lake is one of the
important lake “Which is known as the third lake of Bhopal”.
 The main source of water to the lake is storm but during dry
weather condition the sewage fed drains regularly drain water
in the lake.
 The fisheries department is harvesting fish with the help of the
fisherman societies, which is a source of income to fisherman for
their livelihood.

5.  Objectives of this study are –
Focus on the diversity of fish species population.
The Shahpura Lake located in Bhopal is chosen to carry out these
study.

6.  Water samples are collected from four sites in the month of
September, October and November during the year 2016.
 The water samples are collected in plastic container.
 Fishes were collected from Shahpura Lake, Bhopal dist., M.P.,
with the help of local fisherman using different types of nets- Gill
nets, Cast nets etc.
 After collection fish species are identified on the basis of
morphometric measurement, fin formula and the classification
given by Jayram, Jhingaran, Shrivastava etc.

7.  During the period under study the range of variation in different
physico-chemical parameters is as –

10.  On the basis of this study Shahpura Lake is polluted in nature
 The result of the physico-chemical examination of this lake could
be helpful in the management of the lake for its water quality
and fisheries.

11.  Six fish species belonging to two families are found in the
Shahpura Lake – (1) Cyprinidae (2) Chichlidae.

13.  Out of all these species, Tilapia mossambica is flourishing well
because it breeds in every 3 months, grows well in the sewage
polluted water.
 It is the most dominant species in this lake as is predatory in
nature.
 Hypophthalmichthys molitrix is found less in number comparison
to the other species.

14.  The current study was conducted for period of three months
from September to November (2016) .
 Lake is stocked with IMC and Exoctic carps for fish culture.
 In Shahpura Lake Tilapia was found in abundance ,which is an
exotic fish and not stocked.
 Abundance ofTilapia is posing threat to local fish of lake.
