This presentation highlights the importance of Roadspace Allocation within transport planning and illustrates how to develop a successful Roadspace Allocation Framework. Further to this the presentation gives an insight to understanding and meeting user requirements. It then progresses to utilise various case studies in Birmingham to further demonstrate how these frameworks can be put into practice.
Shenzhen International 3D Street Design Scheme - Huaqiangbei Roadudpcltd
The Huaqiangbei district and Huaqiangbei Road experiences the highest occupant density and some of the most congested traffic in Shenzhen.
The design concept was developed to strengthen the existing electronics and fashion businesses along Huaqiangbei Road, capitalizing on the high pedestrian flow, and introducing fine dining and entertainment opportunities to the area. Key attractions and landscape features were proposed throughout the design area, including specific streetscape elements catering for the four activity quadrants; Hi-Tech Quadrant, Fashion Quadrant, Lifestyle Quadrant and Multi-Media Quadrant, in addition to the Central Spine (Huaqiangbei Road).
The poor quality of our streets causes over 160 deaths every year. There is a dire need for street design guidelines that ensure high quality streets through standardization of essential street elements
The director, Kevin Benny, has summarized his initial thoughts on directing William Inge's play "The Bus Stop". He is inspired by the painting "Nighthawks" which captures the lonely isolation of the characters. He outlines hypothetical casting choices and discusses the realistic style of the production. The set designer draws inspiration from "Nighthawks" and aims to create an authentic 1950s diner interior juxtaposed with a dull exterior. The costume designer outlines plain dresses for the waitresses and fancier clothes for the singer, with appropriate coats given the cold weather. The lighting designer aims to use blue hues and soft lighting to convey the mood of a snowstorm, keeping the action areas lit while surrounding areas are dim.
The document discusses how street design can support community health by promoting active transportation and open streets initiatives. It provides background on how transportation infrastructure currently focuses on cars rather than other modes of travel like walking and biking. Open streets events that limit car access and encourage physical activity are highlighted as a way to boost health through increased mobility options and social interaction. Partnerships between transportation, public health, and other groups are presented as important to jointly support community health and active living through street design changes. Case studies from Open Streets programs in Minneapolis demonstrate how such initiatives have grown in size and participation over time.
This presentation was delivered by Peter Jones from University College London on 2nd October 2015 and highlighted the importance of considering Link and Place when improving street design.

The document is an overview of the upcoming NACTO Urban Street Design Guide, which will provide principles and best practices for designing urban streets. It outlines that the guide will discuss designing streets for multiple purposes, including as public spaces, for business activity, and for safety. It emphasizes that streets can be changed and redesigned through low-cost temporary improvements to test designs. The guide will categorize street design based on street width rather than conventional functional classifications.
The document profiles the urban design and street furniture work of Sertac Mustafaoglu. It highlights several of his projects including the Milliarium Kiosk designed for latest automation technologies, the Marisus Collection designed for European cities consisting of various street furniture items, two bus shelter models installed in Macau, the Lucidus Kiosk produced in three sizes for indoor and outdoor use in Romania, bakery kiosks designed as points-of-sale across Turkey, the Aqua Collection with water-theme street furniture designed for Mumbai, the Eagle Kiosk designed to maximize display space in Croatia, redesigning the Ruch Kiosk to optimize functionality and sales in Poland, four shortlisted bus
Implementation and Systemic Change with UTTIPEC Street Design GuidelinesUttipec Dda
1) The document discusses the implementation of UTTIPEC Street Design Guidelines in Delhi and other Indian cities to make streets more pedestrian friendly and encourage public transit use.
2) It highlights success stories of redesigning streets in Delhi like Aurobindo Marg, IP Marg and Bhairon Marg. It also discusses pilots to reclaim street space from private parking in Vikas Marg and improve multimodal integration at metro stations in Chhatarpur.
3) It covers UTTIPEC's efforts on capacity building, third party audits, community feedback and participating in international forums to promote sustainable street design principles.
The Government Construction Strategy was published by the Cabinet Office in 2011, announcing that all centrally procured contracts should be compliant with BIM by 2016. The key objective of this approach is to reduce the capital cost and the carbon burden from the construction and operation of the built environment by a fifth. So how should a lighting engineer tackle building a digital street lighting information model?

9 Street Design Myths Busted (with case studies)Andy Boenau
Streets can be social spaces!
Professional planners and engineers often talk about making streets more accommodating for humans, regardless of travel mode. That means embracing and protecting the fundamental modes of transport -- walking and bicycling.
You will meet resistance in your quest to improve American infrastructure. Here are 9 myths commonly spread.

Urban Design and Street Typology: Do They Matter?William Riggs
Despite a growing body of work defining the benefits and methods to encourage multi-modal travel, only a small body of research has worked to fuse urban design and complete street philosophies. Based on work recently published in the Journal of Planning Education and Research on street design and two-way street conversions, Dr. William Riggs will discuss how street typologies and complete streets dialogues are linked, and how urban design policies might be advanced to facilitate safer and more livable streets.

The document outlines street design guidelines for Delhi that were approved in November 2010. It discusses the need for such guidelines to prioritize pedestrian access and safety. It acknowledges that currently only 14% of trips in Delhi are by private car, yet most road space is dedicated to them. The guidelines aim to provide equitable distribution of road space and ensure streets are designed to maximize accessibility, safety, comfort and environmental sustainability for all users.
Proposed Street Design Updates-VDOT Summer 2015 RepavingFairfax County
The Fairfax County Department of Transportation is proposing street design updates and a road diet for Kingstowne Village Parkway between Beulah Street and Hayfield Road as part of an upcoming VDOT repaving project. The proposed changes would add bicycle facilities, improve traffic flow and safety for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. The department is seeking public input on the proposal, which includes reducing the number of vehicle travel lanes and adding center turn lanes. Traffic studies indicate the changes would slightly reduce vehicle delays at intersections and significantly cut crashes compared to the existing road design. A similar previous road diet project resulted in lower vehicle speeds and far fewer crashes. The next steps include gathering more community feedback before finalizing the redesign plans for construction this
Dimensions of public space, lecture by Petar Vranic, 3 July 2013Sochi - peshkom
This document outlines the objectives and program for a summer school on architecture and urban design in Sochi, Russia. The summer school aims to collaboratively understand public spaces and how they influence lifestyle through non-conventional design approaches. Over two weeks, participants will develop their understanding of a chosen public space and factors shaping it, and design scenarios to improve local public spaces through stakeholder engagement and implementation planning. The document discusses dimensions of public space, including political, economic, environmental and social roles. It also examines challenges facing public spaces and how their role and accessibility can become more limited and privatized over time.
The cherry: beauty, softness, its heart-shaped plastic has inspired artists since Antiquity. Cherries and strawberries were considered the fruits of paradise and thus represented the souls of men.
