St Joe Career Ministry Interviewing Workshop

Editor's Notes

  1. WELCOME the group to the ministry and to this workshop. INTRODUCE yourself, and provide a little bit of your professional and spiritual background. EXPLAIN that we will spend about 30 minutes discussing the basic principles behind career networking, which will include some time for questions and answers. ASK if there are any questions before we begin.
  2. TELL the group that it is your goal to provide them with this information before the end of the session, and highlight the different topics on this slide. ASK by a show of hands, who has ever been in a job interview. SHARE a story of your own that is related to effective interviewing skills and techniques.
  3. You finally have an interview! Your moment of truth has arrived. Whether your interview is on campus or off, it is important to make the most of it. Because to be successful, you should always seek to retain control of the process, and the only way to do this is to have control over the final decision. You can always walk away from a company that you later decide you have no interest in, but you need to remain in positive control to retain the power to pick and choose. Your objective in every interview should be to take yourself one step further toward generating a potential job offer. Or to remove you from consideration if the job is truly not an appropriate fit. You can do that by doing your very best in each and every interview. Treat every interview as if it were the only one you will ever get with that company and your only opportunity to convince them that you are the best candidate for the position. Although there may be several interviews before the eventual offer, you must score positively in each interview.
  4. What can you do to set yourself apart in your interview? The most important aspect of successful interviewing is not your experience, your degree or your resume. That’s what got you the interview. The key to successful interviewing can be summed up in one word: passion. It’s your passion for the job that will set you apart from the crowd. How can you demonstrate your passion in the interview? Though your enthusiasm for the job and behavioral examples of how your passion has had a positive impact on results. If you can show me, in your words, actions and past behaviors, that you have true passion toward achieving excellence, you can and will be chosen over the superstar. Let your passion for the job show through in every aspect of your interview.
  5. Your attitude determines whether you will “make the cut” or be discarded. Remember, there are plenty of competitors with the ability to do almost any given job—especially at the entry level. The way most employers differentiate at the entry level is by candidates’ attitude and passion toward the job. Your attitude and passion is what recruiters remember when the dust has settled after they have reviewed ten, twenty, or even one hundred candidates—you were the one who was sincerely willing to put forth your very best effort. If you have the attitude of wanting to do your very best for the company, of being focused on the company’s needs, of putting yourself forth as the person who will be committed and dedicated to fulfilling their needs, you will likely be the one chosen. Why is attitude so important? Because most companies already have their full share of multitalented superstars who care about no one but themselves. Ask any manager who the most valuable member of his team is, and he will point not to the overrated superstar, but to the person who has the “can do” attitude, the person who can be counted on in any situation, the person who truly strives for excellence. Give me a team player who is achieving at 99 percent and I will take her over a flashy superstar who is running at 50 percent efficiency any day of the week. And so will 99 percent of all Hiring Managers. So don’t worry if you are not “superstar” quality. If you can show me, in your words and actions, that you are ready to put forth your very best effort toward achieving excellence, you will be chosen over the superstar. You can show your winning attitude in the way you present yourself. Incorporate the actual words “positive attitude,” “passion for excellence,” and “striving to be my best” into your interview language. Then show by your stories and examples how these characteristics are reflected in your life. Show me when and where and how you have put forth extra effort above and beyond the call of duty. Show me how you beat a deadline, how you excelled in a project, or how you made a difference by going the extra mile. If you can show me, by words and examples, your “can do” attitude, it is you I will hire, while all of the superstars will receive polite rejection letters to add to their growing collections.
  6. Tough question No. 1: "Tell me about yourself." This is usually the opening question in an interview and it's the perfect moment for you to toot your own horn -- not to tell your life history. Your answers should be a quick rundown of your qualifications and experience. Talk about your education, work history, recent career experience and future goals. Suggested answer: "I graduated from University X and since then, I have been working in public relations with an agency where I have generated millions of PR hits for my clients. While I've enjoyed working on the agency side, I'm looking to expand my horizons and start doing PR for corporate companies such as this one." Tough question No. 2: "Why did you leave your last job?" This is your chance to talk about your experience and your career goals, not to badmouth a former boss or give a laundry list of reasons for your exit. Instead, focus on what you learned in your previous position and how you are ready to use those skills in a new position. Suggested answer: "The company just wasn't a good fit for my creativity, but I learned that organizations have distinct personalities just like people do. Now I know where I'll be a better fit." Tough question No. 3: "Where do you see yourself in five years?" Let the employer know that you're stable and you want to be with this company for the long haul. Keep your aspirations to take over the firm with which you are interviewing, own your own company, retire at 40 or be married with five children to yourself. Suggested answer:  "I want to secure a civil engineering position with a national firm that concentrates on retail development. Ideally, I would like to work for a young company, such as this one, so I can get in on the ground floor and take advantage of all the opportunities a growing firm has to offer."
  7. Tough question No. 4: "What are your weaknesses?" The key to answering this age-old question is not to respond literally. Your future employer most likely won't care if your weak spot is that you can't cook, nor do they want to hear the generic responses, like you're "too detail oriented" or "work too hard." Respond to this query by identifying areas in your work where you can improve and figure out how they can be assets to a future employer. If you didn't have the opportunity to develop certain skills at your previous job, explain how eager you are to gain that skill in a new position. Suggested answer: "In my last position, I wasn't able to develop my public-speaking skills. I'd really like to be able to work in a place that will help me get better at giving presentations and talking in front of others." Tough question No. 5: "Why were you laid off?" This question will become more common as the economy continues to slow down. It's a tough question, however, especially because many workers aren't told exactly why they were laid off. The best way to tackle this question is to answer as honestly as possible. Suggested answer: "As I'm sure you're aware, the economy is tough right now and my company felt the effects of it. I was part of a large staff reduction and that's really all I know. I am confident, however, that it had nothing to do with my job performance, as exemplified by my accomplishments. For example..." Tough question No. 6: "Tell me about the worst boss you ever had." Never, ever talk badly about your past bosses. A potential boss will anticipate that you'll talk about him or her in the same manner somewhere down the line. Suggested answer: "While none of my past bosses were awful, there are some who taught me more than others did. I've definitely learned what types of management styles I work with the best."
  8. Tough question No. 7: How would others describe you? You should always be asking for feedback from your colleagues and supervisors in order to gauge your performance; this way, you can honestly answer the question based on their comments. Keep track of the feedback to be able to give to an employer, if asked. Doing so will also help you identify strengths and weaknesses. Suggested answer: "My former colleagues have said that I'm easy to do business with and that I always hit the ground running with new projects. I have more specific feedback with me, if you'd like to take a look at it." Tough question No. 8: "What can you offer me that another person can't?" This is when you talk about your record of getting things done. Go into specifics from your résumé and portfolio; show an employer your value and how you'd be an asset. Suggested answer: "I'm the best person for the job. I know there are other candidates who could fill this position, but my passion for excellence sets me apart from the pack. I am committed to always producing the best results. For example..." Tough question No. 9: "If you could choose any company to work for, where would you go?"   Never say that you would choose any company other than the one where you are interviewing. Talk about the job and the company for which you are being interviewed. Suggested answer: "I wouldn't have applied for this position if I didn't sincerely want to work with your organization." Continue with specific examples of why you respect the company with which you are interviewing and why you'll be a good fit.
  9. Developing an awareness of facial expressions as feedback makes us better communicators and increases our emotional intelligence. We can change streams, adapt focus and clarify what is apparently causing confusion when we react intelligently to facial clues.
  10. LIMIT YOUR OWN TALKING You can’t talk and listen at the same time. THINK LIKE YOUR CUSTOMER Your customer needs and problems are important…..you’ll understand and retain them better if you keep their point of view. ASK QUESTIONS If you don’t understand something…or feel you don’t understand a point….clear it up now before it embarrasses you later. DON’T INTERRUPT A pause…even a long pause…doesn’t meat the customer is finished saying everything they want to. CONCENTRATE Focus your mind on what the customer is saying. Practice shutting out outside distractions. TAKE CONCISE/COMPLETE NOTES This will help you remember important points. But…be selective. Trying to write down everything the customer says can result in being left far behind or retaining relevant ideas. LISTEN FOR IDEAS/CONCEPTS….NOT JUST WORDS Get the whole picture….not just isolated bits and pieces. INTERJECTIONS An occasional, “Yes”…”I understand”…etc…show the customer you’re still with them….however don’t overdo or use meaningless comments. TURN OFF YOUR OWN WORDS This isn’t always easy…but personal fears, worries or problems connected with the contact, form kind of a “static” that can obscure the customer’s message. PREPARE IN ADVANCE Remarks and questions prepared in advance….when possible….free your mind for listening. REACT TO IDEAS…NOT THE PERSON Don’t allow irritation at things the customer may say….or at their manner….this will distract you. DON’T JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS Avoid making unwarranted assumptions about what the customer is going to say….or mentally trying to complete their sentences. LISTEN FOR THE OVERTONES You can learn a great deal about the customer for the way they say things and the way they react to what you say. TIP: Make your conversations with your friends, family, the people who serve you in the places you buy, a tool for improving your listening skills…for :sharpening your inner ear.”
  11. Would you believe that words only represent 7% of out of our total communication. VQ’s only 38% and the majority is Physiology or body language at 55% So what does that mean for you? Who was the philosopher that said…”what you are speaks so loudly, I cant hear what you are saying”? It’s True! People size you up within 3 seconds of meeting you….haven't you done it?
