The digital life has become an integral part of most of today's society. Though, whenever a user opens a web page, its preferences and researches are being tracked down, without users' knowledge. Being privacy a fundamental concept for living in society, are users of the Internet, in its various platforms (computers, smartphones, online shopping, etc.) aware of what happens to their data?
To address this broader issue, a survey with 8 questions was developed, to comprise different applications (websites, Facebook, Messenger). The study sample consisted of 185 participants, 136 women (73.5%) and 47 males (25.4%), aged between 18 and 63 years (M = 34.4; SD = 19.10).
The results showed that most participants (female - n = 83 [61%]; male - n = 36 [76.6%]) do not read the terms of use carefully when registering on websites. However, most users (female - n = 92 [67.6%]; male - n = 28 [59.6%]) also reported having refused to join a site or social network, because they considered that the terms of their privacy was being violated.
Regarding gender differences with respect to privacy issues, this was only significant considering the lack of knowledge about the potential of Facebook "Messenger" tool used in smartphones (χ2 (1) = 4:36, p = .044), with female reporting a higher lack of knowledge.
