Hackney Flower
Stephen Gill – Hackney Flowers

“The pictures in this book were formed out of
my longstanding interest in east London.
In my studio I arranged plants, flowers,
seeds and other ephemera I’d been
collecting in Hackney Wick and else wherein
the Hackney area, and photographed them
against other photographs that I’d made and
found in the same vicinity.

I also buried some of the base pictures in Hackney
Wick, allowing the place itself to imprint upon the images
through decay or markings.
Interspersed with these I have placed portraits of
members of the public in Hackney”
