A talk I gave a while ago at Creative Morning Hanoi about dealing with an unexpected twist in my life.
In this talk, you'll see
- Curiosity is not only "Oh what's that?". It's also "OH, that's interesting. I wonder what that means to me?" (which is of course much easier said than done)
- A definition of Curiosity: the pursuit of Joy in the unknown.

Success, failure and the drive to keep creating by elizabeth gilbert67 Golden Rules
So, a few years ago I was at JFK
Airport about to get on a flight, when I
was approached by two women who I do
not think would be insulted to hear
themselves described as tiny old toughtalking
Italian-American broads.
The taller one, who is like up here, she
comes marching up to me, and she goes,
"Honey, I gotta ask you something. You
got something to do with that whole 'Eat,
Pray, Love' thing that's been going on
lately?“ - And I said, "Yes, I did."

June 13, 2011. It was time to celebrate my wedding anniversary. That day, however, was different. I had quit my job. We found ourselves financially insecure.
Do you remember the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland? Alice would ask the cat for directions, but she wouldn’t know where she wanted to go. The disappearing cat would tell her that if she didn’t know where she wanted to go, then it didn’t matter where the roads led to.
Where did I want to go? How would any map help? Why did I join a journey only to quit later? Which journey would keep me satisfied for life? What destination would have me contended?

9. “Seriously, your chasing the next
adventure seems to be an attempt to
escape something. It seems that you
have to be with whatever you have a
hard time being with. Perhaps you
need to pay your debts of gratitude by
serving something there before you can
be released.”
10. “Choosing Curiosity over Fear”
-Elizabeth Gilbert, author of “Eat, Pray, Love”--your friend here-
11. Fear of going home…
- Stuck in old patterns
- Unfinished family messiness
12. Home: what touches you so much that
you want to help transform it.
Making home > going home.
13. Deep Boredom: a state of existential
meaninglessness. An anti-creativity.
14. Caution: do not try getting to know
your fear alone at home …
…unless joy is so important that
you dare risking the comfort of
your old self.
16. Curiosity and the meaningful life
- Meaning comes from walking the uncertain
path.
- Curiosity: seeking out newness with an eye to
discover meaning.
17. On
questions
“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart
and try to love the questions themselves […] Do not
now seek the answers, which cannot be given you
because you would not be able to live them. And
the point is, to live everything.” - Rilke
Not everyone has to have this level of introspection, but if you do, your life will have meaning.
I’m actually different enough to handle it.
TALK ABOUT MY DYING LIFE HERE. I’ve got to move. The sign has started way way before.
No, I don’t advocate you to follow your passion – I think it’s not a good advice – but I’d advocate you to practice listening to your own little voice.
May you have the wisdom to enter generously into your own uneaseTo discover the new direction your longing wants you to take.

Some sorts of dying inside. Something is missing in life. I was ready for a change.
Where do you get the courage? Love life enough to say No to anything that doesn’t serve it.
How relevant it is to the creative people? Because your life.
I have friends who have quit everything to work in a farm… I’m not there yet.
Only then can you craft your own meaning in the world.
But curiosity can also find expression in pure forms. And so from time to time, we pack our bags, buy tickets, and head off in random directions, both inward and outward, to potentially unpleasant and unhappy places. And we still enjoy ourselves.
