Dolly Parton wrote the song "Coat of Many Colors" in 1971 about her childhood growing up in poverty. The song describes how her mother sewed together scraps of fabric to make her a coat since they could not afford to buy her a new one. Though made from rags, the young Dolly was proud to wear the coat her mother made for her with love, and it kept her warm despite having no money.
